Analekta. Independent Canadian label. Mostly CD-quality lossless downloads available, but high-res options are gradually being added.

Cedille ("Chicago's Classical Record Label"). As with Analekta, CD-quality downloads predominate, but higher-res options are being added.

Thanks for that - I'd forgotten I have an Analekta release of Entremont playing Mathieu.

Her stuff with the Norwegian CO (Naim and Chandos) is really good. (I've not heard it hi res so can't comment on sound quality.)

Oh hell not another Beethoven Violin Concerto to buy - my collection may not be in Pastoralguy's league but I have over 20 recordings of the piece - much the most extensive collection of any piece - Menuhin (5) all but the Klemperer and Masur and one live ) Heifetz, Oistrakh(2) , Haendel, Perlman(2), Zukerman, Hahn, Chase, Huggett,Steinbacher, Kreisler,Schneiderhan,Stern, Batiashvili( disappointing cries out for a conductor),Neveu(live) and Mutter(2) !

...and even with that collection, some surprising omissions - Milstein, Suk, Kennedy, Szeryng, Grumiaux, Vengerov, Francescatti, Gruenberg....and one I used to have on LP - was there a CD - Campoli/Pritchard.

Just received an email from Linn to say that they are going to start releasing high resolution versions of the Universal back catalogue - DG, Decca etc.

Not much there yet, but here's an example of what is...

Amen to the Grumiaux, the version I grew up with and which I still remember with fondness (as far as I recall, that was the first recording which used the Kreisler cadenzas).

Just thought of another LP version I had, also there was a Brahms - Krebbers/CAO/Haitink both on the excellent Philips Universo label.

There were three Grumiaux recordings - Von Beinum, Galliera and Colin Davis . Which one is the best ?

Sorry, never had the Grumiaux(s), but there's a terrific Gruenberg/Horenstein/NPO on Chesky, and a firm personal favourite is the starkly dramatic Zehetmair/Bruggen/Orch. of 18thC.

Oh, and don't forget the Tetzlaff/Zinman in Zurich, excellent HIP-style again!

I had the same email. Prices are still way too high, though; eighteen quid for 24bit flacs of the Solti Mahler 8 is a case in point. And now Channel is offering DSD downloads at silly prices too. Some of the best downloads I've heard have been from the likes of HDTT, whose pricing is much more realistic. I'm fortunate that as a reviewer I get my downloads for free, but I do wonder how long they can sustain such high prices.

Yes, to eclassical, chapeau! for their pricing! I've already downloaded Vanska's Beethoven 4 (stunning - exceptional - sound and performance) and his latest Sibelius 5 ( a new Minneapolis one); these, along with Bruch's 1st Vn.Cto with Gluzman and Litton, on BIS at 24-bit all for $16!

I'm off now to go mad in there again...
