This was from a box that had taken up a lot of real estate on my shelf, and it sounds better coming off the HD

Like you I started to put my collection on to hard drive, and sometimes it is very useful. However, it is unlikely I'll do it all. I do have the Bernstein box, and actually I don't find it such a problem - though I can see that others might. In any case, I have ripped the whole of that set, so I don't need to access it often.

I haven't bothered with the Walter box - which is nevertheless tempting. I did have the Walter Mahler box a while back (normal size), which is very good.

It's interesting that you say things sound better off your HD. This will, of course, depend on the DAC you use, and is perfectly possible. I can't say I have the same experience, as my DACs (I have effectively two) either sound very similar, or in one comparison they sound different, but one is sweeter, and one has more detail, so the concept of "better" is not simply applied.

... it may have already been flagged up : but due for release next month volume 55 and ultimate of the Suzuki Bach Cantatas.

Now we have the John-Eliot G available ultra-cheap, all we need is a reasonably priced version of the Koopman. And a hurrying-along of the Kuijken (o for a cheapish complete! ). Some further Herreweghes wd be nice too...

        The Crying of Wind

Ordinarily a recital of songs for tenor and oboe would not be one to set the pulse racing. However, this release from Messrs Padmore and Daniel looks a bit special.

Is there any more desolate setting of 20th century verse than The Curlew?

For those interested: These are "only" the complete Webern works with opus numbers (originally CBS Masterworks, 1978).
Boulez' DGG complete Webern consists of 6 CDs

Incidentally has Pierre Boulez retired from the concert platform now ?

Thanks for this information. Do you have a preferred set?

Shame no sign of a Zino Francescatti box in that latest Sony list .

Tempted but won't be bothering.
I have the same Furtwangler Ring , I downloaded the Pristine Audio covers and transferred the discs from that stupid box into normal double jewel cases. Not perfect but better than the floor.

The DGG 6CD set is as complete as you can get it (though e.g. a Ballad for tenor and orchestra "Siegfrieds Tod" hasn't been included, though the piece exists in a complete score and its musical language is not different from the Idyll for orchestra "Im Sommerwind"), including the pre-Schönberg-pieces, but also including the movements for published pieces which Webern conceived and completely composed, but eventually didn't make it into a published work with opus number. Examples: the piano quintet, the 1905/'06 movements for string quartet, 11 movements for orchestra all originally intended for opus 10, a 3rd mvt for the string trio opus 20, the Kinderstück (childrens' piece for piano), or the discarded (but complete) cello-sonata-movement, meant to accompany opus 11.
All these are not to be found in the CBS-set, but most definitely complete Webern's output and his personality beyond recognition compared with opus 1- 31 only.

I prefer the DGG 6CD set therefore, on basis of completeness, as in terms of quality the sets IMO are on par.

                        Roehre,

Thanks for the advice. I thought as you have said the DG set was better. However, the other set is significantly cheaper. But good music is never cheap...

I was very impressed with the singing and playing on the clips below. Be curious to hear how Baroque dream team Invernizzi/Mingardo fare in this repertoire. Tho' isn't Mingardo a contralto? (I pinched those listings from Presto.)

Ouch! Even more expensive than I had feared.

I expected it to be expensive but really... Been looking forward to this but sadly the price looks beyond my pocket unless the horses or lottery oblige.
