Not one for me, though only because I got this:

a couple of years ago, when it was just a little over a quarter of its current asking price on amazon.co.uk.

That's a remarkably attractive box-set... Just a lovely artefact. Not tempted though, I don't 'do' mega-boxes...

Sometimes I do, most of the times I don't.
That's the case with this one, as Archive produced a 25CD set Collectio Argenteum (Silver Collection) for their 25th anniversary in 1988 , which is nearly entirely copied into this 50CD set .

That's the case with this one, as Archive produced a 25CD set Collectio Argenteum (Silver Collection) for their 25th anniversary in 1988 , which is nearly entirely copied into this 50CD set .

Yes, that was an excellent set of re-releases...one that I was lucky enough to acquire and still treasure is of Kenneth Gilbert playing Froberger.

Looks rather tempting! I see that DG are issuing a 41 cder of 'Symphony Edition' by Claudio abb do. I expect I have a lot of these already?

Bit early to find a deal on the latter compounded by some confusion over the release date. AmUk has it as 22 April but Presto gives 8 April. The All Baroque Box can be had for as little as £25.57 from the US if one is prepared to risk import duty and other charges. However, when these are taken into account £35.22 from the next listed (UK based) seller, seems the way to go.

I was not aware that there was another set. However, the big box appears to be the set in the link below as the timings listed on my copy of it are identical (within a second) to those listed on the DG website for the big box which unhelpfully says nothing about recording dates. Whether this makes it the one with the 'faster HIP-style tempi' I don't know.

"Claudio Abbado recorded a complete Beethoven symphony cycle with the Berlin Philharmonic in 2000 in Berlin. For all its fast tempi and crisp articulation, much of it struck me as rather grey and dispassionate. There were some good points - fine accounts of symphonies 1, 2, 4 and 9 - but overall it was disappointing. This 'new' set was mostly recorded just one year later, taken from live performances in Rome, but with the earlier Berlin account of the ninth retained."
