The Abbado big box arrived this afternoon. It's an absolute monster of a box and weighs a ton. It's so heavy I can't lift it so it remains on the floor for now until I can get it on to a sufficiently strong table. I can't help but think I might have gone a bit far with this one
It's a strictly numbered limited edition and mine is 1875 of 2650.
If the web is right it’s the Brandenburgs.
257 CD’s in total.
Never saw him in concert but I would put his 1976 Simon Boccanegra at Covent Garden (imported from La Scala) in the top 5 Opera experiences in 50 years of Opera going. Thankfully it was recorded.
EH is correct in saying that Disc 1 is the Bach Brandenburgs. I've chosen to play Mendelssohn's Ruy Blas Overture, Mozart PC 20 with Rudolf Serkin and the complete Bartok Miraculous Mandarin all with the LSO.
I saw Abbado live so many times it's amazing. Not just in London but also in Vienna, Berlin and Venice. Some unforgettable concerts there.
"The sound is the handwriting of the conductor" - Bernard Haitink
Listen to unlimited or download William Byrd - Music for the Virginalls by Lydia Maria Blank in Hi-Res quality on Qobuz. Subscription from £10.83/month.
Lydia Maria Blank’s previous recordings have been very impressive indeed, I think she’s the real deal.

I was lucky enough to hear him conduct a few times. The first time was with the LSO where he conducted Mozart 41 and Brahms 4. It was part of an LSO/Shell tour. The level of commitment from both Orchestra and conductor suggested it was the only time these musicians were ever going to perform these works!!
Alas, I also heard him conduct the Schumann piano concerto and Brahms 3 with the Berliner Philharmoniker. He’d told the press he was leaving the orchestra before telling them so, to put it mildly, the atmosphere was quite frosty! He conducted Brahms 3 looking at the Usher Hall’s ceiling and the Schumann was absolutely dreadful with no co-ordination between soloist and conductor! One of the most disappointing performances I’ve ever attended!
Very good on first listen - and a good organ too. I can’t find the booklet online but, while looking, I saw that he published a book on Frescobaldi last year
This looks like a fascinating recital of 400 years of music from Palestrina to Debussy on the harpsichord! The latest disc from the wonderful Jean Rondeau.
