I'm keen to buy some of Walter's Mozart Symphonies but am having a devil of a time trying to locate the recordings which have been most well-received.

There's this new box set, but some very negative feedback regarding the transfers of this set:

It's Mozart and Walter with the CSO, but are these his mono or stereo recordings?

And then there are these older discs, which I believe are his mono recordings, some with the NYPO, others CSO:

    And this one!

It's confusing and infuriating. Any help to unravel my befuddlement would be most gratefully received.

I beg to remain your most humble servant, etc.

The new box, budget price, no notes, has the stereo recordings of the last six symphonies, as has the last illustrated box.

Neither contain the mono 1956 Birth of a Performance of the Linz.

A few more bits of info here, including the use of the NYPO

      [cheaper elsewhere]

I don't know whether the other works in the 6CD box are in stereo. The overtures were among Walter's final recordings so they will be in stereo.

I don't have my box to hand and won't for a couple of days. However there are some mono symphonies as well as the stereo recordings of the last 6. The back cover identifies the mono recordings if you can find a hi-res picture.

I wasn't over-pleased with sound quality but I don't know to what extent that was the transfers as opposed to shortcomings with the original sound.

Excellent idea! It's years since I heard some of the last six but thought the sound good for the period.

Those who were excited by the performances of the Bach Missae Breves by the French group Pygmalion, might be happy to know that their new version of the B minor mass is shortly due for release:

[Decisions, decisions. Both amazon.co.uk and hmv.com have it at £9.00 including p&p ('pre-order').]

Glorious indeed, Bryn - thanks so much for finding this sample. I'll be pre-ordering it too!

And thanks to Bryn's excerpt, I also discovered on the same website a sneak preview of Jos Van Immerseel/Anima Aeterna's new Debussy disc out in October - some beautiful sounds here:

                        Recent delights:

                        Bruckner Symphony No.2 (1877) - Northern Sinfonia/Venzago (CPO CD)
As fresh & startlingly radical as I've heard, gorgeously played at The Sage...

Liszt Dante Symphony - Les Siecles/Roth (M.A.Sud CD)
Terrifying and tender reading - Spectacular sound from Laon Cathedral - abandon hope all ears... (and some speakers).

Maxwell Davies Symphonies 4&5 - SCO/Philharmonia/Max (Naxos CD)
5th reaquaintance newly amazing, 4th a tough nut but getting there (stunning ending...)

Sorry for short expo but hand(s) and heads giving much gip...

...All 5-star for the adventurous - happy listening...

No sign of it as a 'pre-order' item anywhere that I can find yet. It would have to by very cheap to attract me.

I have the 4th and 7th and was stunned. The unfolding of this set is going to prove hurtful to the pocket.

My copy is on the way from Amazon France. I look forward to having a listen, though probably not until Friday 5th Oct when the next-door neighbour will be out of the house.
