It may seem undesirable to highlight this again, given the wilfully misleading booklet note by the cellist regarding the supposed superiority of analogue recording techniques, no mention of the carrier being itself digital etc etc....not to mention the (I hope intentional) comedy of the coverline.
But it turns out to be a wonderful reading of the sonatas, in very immediate, full, rich wide-ranging sound. These are subtle and rhythmically agile, moderate tempi (15'44 for 1st movement of the E Minor) but again a beautifully-judged rubato and sensitive micro-dynamics. I warmed to them (and the distinctive balance) more and more as I listened repeatedly; they draw you in, and the unusual c/w is compelling too.
Only caveats: perhaps the piano could offer greater tonal variety; the passionato of No.2 isn't really impassioned enough; but to be fair, it accords with the interpretive approach.
Brahms Analogue: Cello Sonatas 1&2, Four Serious Songs
Leonard Elschenbroich & Alexei Grynyuk

Decca Classics: now January 27 2023
Presto: December 16 2022
Amazon: (still tbc): December 1 2023.
As of now:
Decca Classics website: release date of February 10.
Amazon: March 10
Presto: March 10
However, my order is with Presto who have e-mailed to say it is 'unexpectedly out of stock' at the supplier (???) and delivery now expected in two weeks.
Bearing in mind that the original release date was October 16 and Presto took my payment that same month, this has been the most frustrating release saga I've ever had. It might not be all over yet!"The sound is the handwriting of the conductor" - Bernard Haitink

Looks interesting doesn't it? Never really got on with Fire or Ecstasy, feels like a good time to revisit any of (my preferred) first three...
Try to fit it in later....(apt match for Bruckner and Messaien at least...)

A rather odd download (at least in my opinion) available from 3 February 2023.
Abbado: Bach - Bartók. Deutsche Grammophon: 4864045. Buy download online. Victor Aviat (oboe), Lucas Macias Navarro (oboe), Guido Gualandi (oboe), Giuliano Carmignola (violino piccolo, violin, violino principale), Enrico Bronzi (cello), Raphael Christ (violin), Benoît Grenet (cello), Mario Brunello (cello), Behran Rassekhi (viola), Simone Jandl (viola), Danusha...
Bach, J S: Brandenburg Concerto No. 1 in F Major, BWV1046
Bach, J S: Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 in F Major, BWV1047
Bach, J S: Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G Major, BWV1048
Bach, J S: Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 in G major, BWV1049
Bach, J S: Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 in D major, BWV1050
Bach, J S: Brandenburg Concerto No. 6 in B flat major, BWV1051
Bartók: Piano Concerto No. 1, BB 91, Sz. 83
Bartók: Piano Concerto No. 2, BB 101, Sz. 95
Bartók: The Miraculous Mandarin, Op. 19, Sz. 73 (ballet)
Bartók: Two Portraits Op. 5
All conducted by Abbado.
The Brandenburgs aren't in numerical order!
I can't really imagine who this is aimed at, but I'm currently listening to the Miraculous Mandarin (early preparation for a potential Summer BaL), as this set has found its way onto Deezer.

Buy a part a week, rather like those educational magazines I used to get each Friday from the newsagent!
