Left dumped on the doorstep by Amazon, despite the package being quite small enough to go through the letterbox (I put it through before opening the front door). To add insult to injury, Amazon falsely claimed that the package had been "Parcel was handed to resident." I did not get home from the AMM gig until nearly 2 in the morning and there was the package sitting on the doorstep for any passing opportunist the fright of their life on opening and listening to it.
Not over-impressed with the 5.0 surround presentation but it's better than making do with 2 channels. Strange that two such iconic Stockhausen multi-group works as Gruppen and Carré should each have only been issued once in surround sound.
[Actually, I've now got to Gruppe 57 and that seems better presented in terms of the surround soundstage. I may have been too swift to judgement. I will listen again, later. Oh, and there's a misprint of the duration of the performance of Carré as given in the booklet. There it reads 27:34. It should read 37:24, as given on the back of the packging]

Alkan - The Complete Piano music volume 5 - 11 Pieces dans le stlye religieuses, Op.72, Etude alla barbaro and Etude (from the Encyclopedie du Pianiste Compositeur) - Mark Viner, Piano Classics PCL10197.
Phenomenal playing again from the supremely talented Mark Viner! Very interesting music too, some of the harmonies (especially in the 2 etudes at the end of the disc) are completely bonkers and not the sort of thing you'd expect to hear from a composer who was writing in the mid-19th century.
As an aside, we're off to see Mr. Viner in concert in 4 weeks time at the Wensleydale Concert Series at Aysgarth - he's playing the following programme:
Chopin - Fantaisie, Op. 49
Fauré - 6e Nocturne, Op. 63
Beethoven - Sonata Op. 110
Alkan - Douze Etudes dans tous les tons mineurs, Op. 39 No. 12 ‘Le Festin d’Esope’
Liszt - Die Zelle in Nonnenwerth, S. 534iii
Liszt - Valse de l’opéra Faust de Gounod, S. 407
If you are going, we will see you there!Kultur, MDR, MDR Kultur, Radio, Kulturfernsehen, MDR FIGARO, artour, Kino Royal, Kinoroyal, Erlebnis Musik, Lebensläufe, Klassik, Film, Literatur, Theater, Kino, Bühne, Oper, Feature, Hörspiele, Lesezeit, Lesung
Scroll down for an extract from Mark's contribution. According to his recent FB post, the full recital will be broadcast later this autumn.
