Hadn’t realised that Lady Solti passed away earlier this year.

Originally posted by Bryn View PostSurprisingly, I have not yet got round to ordering that from Simon. Their earlier recording of Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello was very good. A fine alternative to the Tilbury/Smith Quartet members. Come to that, Piano and String Quartet is not even on the Another Timbre site yet, though I knew it was down for a November release.

Originally posted by TBuckley View PostIt is on the 'Coming Next' part of the home page but there is currently no ordering button for CD - I had a quick look on bandcamp but it isn't showing there yet. I looked at the Tilbury/Smith Qt set a while back as an alternative to my Takahashi/Kronos recording. I didn't pursue it as I was put off by the DVD format and also, at 89mins, it was probably a bit slow for my taste. The new recording handily comes in at just under 80 mins.

Originally posted by Bryn View PostNow not only on DVD, see http://www.jtilbury.com/morton-feldman/ for a download option. There is a very special character to the playing on that performance. The Smith Quartet used baroque bows to aid in producing the fine pianissimi that Feldman called for. This is a live performance with occasional patches from the rehearsals where audience noise, et al interfered with the music. The most remarkable triumph of editing is probably that in the recording of For John Cage. There was literally a car crash outside the venue that was clearly to be heard inside. Fortunately, Sebastian Lexer was able to 'seamlessly' patch in from a spot-on rehearsal take.

So happy to see a complete recording of Rameau's divine "Achante et Céphise" mentioned on the programme this morning. Up to now we've only ever had orchestral suites from it.
I first heard the work at St John's Smith Square back in the 80s, with Trevor Pinnock directing and Nicholas Anderson producing for Radio 3.

Thanks to Gabriel Jackson for recommending this to me.... Op.51 are among the greatest quartets of all, and after hearing the startlingly new (colours and phrasings) No.1 here this morning.... I just had to alert listeners to this.....Can't wait for more later....!
If you followed up my recommendation of the ABC disc of Ironwood, in the Brahms Op.25 & 34, you'll have some idea of what to expect...rich in rubato and portamento & stunningly different colours and textures.... but - individual too, as from the first bars Judith van Driel really leads from the first violin (like Grumiaux!).......
I've adored 51/1 as a personal icon for almost all of my life, and this performance is uniquely thrilling and haunting...wow.
"The quartet play with unwound gut strings and a set of bespoke classical bows."

Originally posted by RichardB View PostYes indeed, it's a very exciting recording too, much more unbuttoned than most Rameau performances on record. I think that leaves only Daphnis et Eglé and a few smaller works still to be recorded.
