Just waiting for this to arrive....any minute now.....!
Glowing review in the Gramophone (Mark Seow)....Original Versions... no timps or trumpets.....

Off to find a shady spot, with Your Cat and Gramophone, football reports and sundry unread Guardian sections....New Scientist on Mindfulness....

And two matches later. International Football is so time-consuming, isn't it? Bach will have to join the queue....

Oh dear! I took a subscription out for Apple Music so I could download pop songs to my ‘phone to use in the gym. I discovered I could listen to this by streaming it through my mobile. Just listened twice whilst doing the hedge!

Very good indeed with superb playing but I could have done with a bit more drama and excitement at key points.

Good grief! You had (very loud!!?) Brahms in competition with the hedge trimmers? Or were you following Brahms' rhythms with your shears...?

The poor old BFO (even in lossless, I hope) never had a chance.....

I was using a pair of heavy duty loppers to cut the hedge down to its bare essentials in anticipation of hiring a chipper to mush it down. It’s unbelievably overgrown due to me neglecting it.

I've just listened to the Symphony again - and the Second Serenade - via Qobuz. By comparison with Herbert Blomstedt's recent Leipzig Brahms - different symphonies so a general observation - which is dramatic and suitably thrilling, it does sound a bit tame. I wonder, though, if that might be an issue with the slightly recessed-sounding recording and whether it wouldn't open out a bit in SACD, particularly in multi-channel. I don't have 6 channel here but in Scotland where I have found that Fischer's Mahler, Rachmaninov, Dvorak etc invariably sound better in multi-channel SACD. Great woodwind in the Serenade - almost as good as Kertesz and the LSO!

Obviously, Timothy West was extremely good at characterising Sir Thomas but his conducting technique was basic so I was very surprised to hear him and the orchestra attempt the beginning of Brahms 3. Inevitably, it was a bit of a shambles with Michael Davis doing some scroll waggling in an attempt to keep it all together. I wondered who choose that particular work knowing it’s one of the most difficult starts in symphonic music.
You can watch it here, in several parts. Yes, it was made by Yorkshire Television.

Timothy West's memorable portrait of Sir Thomas Beecham part 1 of 8. Music performed by the Halle Orchestra.

It's fun -- different from the original (which I also liked)

This is based on Luc Ferrari's Les Anecdotiques. It's more of the same, but it's very good more of the same! On spotify.
