Yes, as fairly extensively discussed on this very forum. There is a rather strange review in the latest edition of the BBC Music Magazine. Having largely evaluated highly both performance and recording quality in the text, the star rating at the end reflects a rather different assessment. The review is by Bayan Northcott. I attended performances by the same forces at the RFH around a year before the recording was made, and reported on it here a the time. I found them pretty revelatory and looked forward to the reported recordings being made. Schiff's introductory talks on the nights, and his contributions to the CD booklets, were/are also very illuminating.

In medias res, nothing but impassioned enthusiasm so far, hope to say more soon but poor health and low energies mean all serious listening (like everything else) is taking a long time ...I might open up a dedicated thread on it later....

One thing I can say for sure is the recorded sound is marvellous - so tangible, perfectly balanced and highly-resolved it would be easy to mistake it for an SACD. A joy to listen to, the performers right there before you...
First musical impressions are of readings combining mature wisdom with freshness and flair. Far, far more to them than some mere instrumental or orchestral revisionism.
The sheer structural originality of No.1's first movement really tells, so the shock of the piano's entry in the recap is truly shocking; one of many examples where the clarity and character of the period instruments and the Blüthner prove their aptitude.
(Just stumbled upon this excellent description...https://www.morissenegor.com/wp-cont...o-Concerto.pdf

Great and Wonderful Brahms, on any stage, by any measure.

Blimey, if that start doesn't get you hooked nothing will. Looking forward to a proper listen tonight, now that I have got Airplay back up and running.

Deservedly so. in my view. I still can't get my head around Bayan Northcott's dismissal with faint praise, via the star system, in the BBCMM. Until now, my benchmark has been the Gilels/CSO/Reiner I got to know in my youth. Of the tradition it hails from, it remains rather special to me but these Schiff/OAE performances and recordings have now taken the high ground, in my opinion.

Has anyone here tried the new Mahler 8 from DG (Dudamel), which they have made available in Dolby Atmos (among other formats)?

Hmmm.. I have an iphone 8 with the latest IOS version a reasonably recent ipad , and Apple Music should all be up to date.
There should be a “Dolby Atmos” switch in music settings...... but I’m not seeing it.......

Edit...apparently I need IOS 14.6, but I’m on 14.4, with no update prompt yet .....

I'll be making do with 96/24 2-channel stereo via QOBUZ (importing now).

I have now listened to the Binchois Consort disc. The music is very interesting and I enjoyed listening to it. The acoustic took some getting used to (my knowledge of acoustic science is almost zero so I cannot comment on the technical aspects) as it is very different from the churches generally used for this type of recording, but it is clear and not difficult to follow the singing. Of course the Binchois Consort - I have several of their earlier discs - is one of the finest ensembles in this type of repertoire.

In Scotland, the Reformation changed far more than it did in England and few traces of religious art and music from that period remain (there are only three fragments of pre-reformation stained glass extant, somewhat incongruously displayed in a window of a minor denominational church in Edinburgh's Cowgate, for example) that we must cherish whatever escaped the Calvinist purges. I hope for more recordings of music from this period. Whoever owns the rights to Collins Classics should consider reissuing their Carver series (I lost mine to a burglar back in the late 1990s!).

Has anyone heard the new recording of Brahms Third Symphony from Ivan Fischer and the Budapest Festival Orchestra yet? A symphony that really sorts out the men from the boys!

Yes - I streamed it from Qobuz the other day (hi-res - so good sound). First impressions were favourable but I need to listen to it again - maybe this afternoon. You are quite right about it "sorting the men from the boys". Unlike its predecessor in the Brahms symphonic canon, rather more difficult to get right. I'd listened to the Argerich/Barenboim Debussy "Fantaisie" just before it so the lovely playing of the Budapest FO was like balm after the decidedly sub-fusc offering from the Berlin Staatskapelle.

I remember seeing a drama programme on, iirc, ITV(!) about the life of Sir Thomas Beecham who was played by Timothy West. As part of the project saw him conducting, The Halle, led by Michael Davis, was dutifully employed. Obviously, Timothy West was extremely good at characterising Sir Thomas but his conducting technique was basic so I was very surprised to hear him and the orchestra attempt the beginning of Brahms 3. Inevitably, it was a bit of a shambles with Michael Davis doing some scroll waggling in an attempt to keep it all together. I wondered who choose that particular work knowing it’s one of the most difficult starts in symphonic music.

Please let me know your opinion, HD. I’m very tempted by this.
