For those who are interested, he features as Ismaele in the recording of Nabucco that the Vienna State Opera is streaming for free on Thursday this week. Unfortunately Domingo also appears as Nabucco in what must be one of his worst attempts at the baritone repertoire. Still, it might be worth it to see de Tommaso in an operatic role.

Just been scrolling through his website and remembered I’d seen him in Otello as Cassio which he sang magnificently. Tenors with an Italianate spinto voice are so vanishingly rare they are almost an endangered species. To think that we have one in England is tremendously exciting for lovers of the Italian repertory...

Very much agreed; he is a really exciting talent.

He is due to sing Macduff in Vienna in June alongside Anna Netrebko and Luca Salsi in a new production by Barrie Kosky, which will hopefully also be shown on Vienna's streaming service.

It’s a bit of a MacDuff role though isn’t it ? He only gets one aria - admittedly a good one...

Big find here is the first ever recording of the 35-minute Suite No.1, a key atonal/neoclassical Skalk composition which some of us have been waiting for years to hear, having merely read about it....

That will shortly change.....! (And CD ordered immediately)...

This should be good, a new recording of Rameau's "Dardanus" from the excellent forces of the Orfeo Orchestra under Gyorgy Vashegyi. I'll be adding it to my existing Minkowski version.

I often get the feeling with Minkowski's Rameau that he's trying to get through the music as quickly as he can (which he seems not to do with Gluck, for example), and actually I don't think I've ever heard a recording of Dardanus that puts it up there with my favourite Rameau, so I'll be adding that one too.

Yes, agreed, although strangely, in his "Symphonie Imaginaire" CD on Archiv, made up of various Rameau dances, he takes that divine "Entrée de Polymnie" at far too lethargic a pace for my liking. Gardiner got it just right in his recording of "Les Boréades".

Excellent news for we fans of Jean Rondeau - a new disc of melancholic Renaissance keyboard music, played on virginals and harpsichord. I heard some extracts this morning, very nice indeed. Here's a taster - Vinteuil will be pleased to see that Mr Rondeau has lost the shaggy caveman look!

The Toccata Settima of early Baroque composer Girolamo Frescobaldi creates a melancholic landscape through chromaticism, one of two distinct voices showcased...

So am I! I hadn't earmarked that one for listening but I'll go with your recommendation.

I confess I haven't heard much of it, but one can usually expect something of a special disc from him. I loved that last 'Barricades' programme with Thomas Dunford.

I was about to post about this on the "WCMAYLTN" thread. I'm sitting here with a befuddled brain (four hours of Zooming without a break) and listening to the PC2 - the set arrived in the post earlier. Just finished - and I think that, on first hearing, it's a breath of fresh air. I much like Schiff's vigorous approach - and, as a donor to the OAE, I'm biased in their favour anyway but any fears I had about the pianist taking on too much to both play and direct were unfounded. In short, a quick reaction (and I may live to regret it) but well worth hearing. And, pace Cloughie and the slow movement, it sounds absolutely right to me.
