Fabulous playing; the Andante (played second) moves along at a proper Andante, and the Finale is also, to my tastes, without any self-indulgent lingering. In terms of recording and playing, this is as good as anything I've heard (and my score contains notes from 14 other versions).
Spot on. Straight onto my best-of-the-year list.

Talk about a familiar loved piece coming up fresh as paint / heard with new ears / &c &c (add clichés).

All the cross-rhythms, inner parts, pulse and energy that I hear in my mind’s ear but never quite in performances. All without undue haste.

      A winner imvvho
The finale has just been played on Essential Classics and described as part of a general classification of their performances as 'thrill-seeking,pumped up and risk-taking' by Suzy Klein.
All very subjective . She also described it as super-fast. I don't think it was - in fact I think the performance I have by Kleiber and the VPO is faster. It is also considerably more exciting.

Very grateful to AMcG for bringing my attention to the Château de Versailles recording of Rameau’s Les Indes Galantes as his Record of the Week this am. Pity there’s no DVD with this - there are with some of CdV's staged events - as it’s evidently a spectacular and colourful production. Better seen live, I expect, but you still get a sense of the theatricality and fun of the opera in this version by La Chappelle Harmonique.
And the tune ends too soon for us all

How do these recordings compare to the classic ones from Jordi Savall, Vints? They have so long been the benchmark versions. I know that these new ones are absolutely complete, and I guess the recording quality must be superior.

... it was Richard Barrett who first mentioned here the earlier François Joubert-Caillet /Acheron volume/s and was full of praise.

              I think they're marvellous.

Of course I loved the Savall when his selections first came out - they were almost all that was then available of Marais, a complete discovery. But these new ones are a new benchmark, beautifully recorded and with great accompaniment. And building up to a complete works...

After hearing these recordings I find the Savall, dare I say it? a bit dull, plutôt fade...

Ah, interesting - I obviously have to invest! I have seen a few video clips of the new one and like what I hear. The problem with Savall's recordings for me were all his heavy breathing and grunts that came with it, presumably from close miking.

Just got hold of the first set for only 20 euros on amazon.fr - seemed too good a bargain to be missed.

I've been eyeing up the upcoming Naxos English Song Collection which is about to be issued as a 25 CD box. It makes a good buy for me since I haven't bought any of the separate discs, having acquired that repertoire mainly from Hyperion, Somm and other labels. Details and cheapest offer at Europadisc. I have the feeling I won't resist the offer.

I see RO has seriously put the boot into Honeck’s Beethoven 9 in Gramophone - anyone heard it ?

It was Andrews record of the week recently! Must give it a full listen.

Yes - I think there was some discussion on another thread - possibly earlier on this one ? I liked the soloist singing in the final movt.

Another Beethoven 9 released this month is much more to my tastes: lean, clean orchestral sounds, a small, incisive choir, 4 excellent soloists (Jennifer France, Christianne Stotijn, Ed Lyon, Matthew Rose), Britten Sinfonia, Thomas Adès. The final release in their complete symphonies series - coupled with symphonies 7 & 8, and Gerald Barry's The Eternal Recurrence.

I have quite a few of these, they are excellent

Comment on the page linked to above, where Highland D had listened.

(Having read Richard Osborne's review in the Gramophone, my summation ("listen? buy? ignore?") is "pulled it about a fair bit and went off the rails tempo-wise". I think I'll stick to the several versions I have on CD or accessible on streaming).
