It can't be often that this symphony is offered as a "filler" to a concerto cycle, but essentially that is how it is presented here, as a coupling to the Choral Fantasy. This is the ninth presented as an arrangement for a wind ensemble, with string accompaniment. A very different take on anything that has been heard before, and quite possibly taking us back to how it would have been heard by Beethoven's first audience. Whether this makes for a fascinating rethink of performance practice or reducing Beethoven to the status of ordinary mortal is the listener's choice.

It has to be said that the recording is spectacular, with details which one would normally expect to be hidden with the fabric of the music, revealed in crystalline immediacy,

The new album Chanson d’Amour from Sabine Devieilhe and Alexandre Tharaud on Erato is The Real Thing, for my money.... excellent singing and playing it seems to me:

Chanson d'Amour. Erato: 9029522427. Buy CD or download online. Sabine Devieilhe (soprano), Alexandre Tharaud (piano)

Her way with Poulenc’s Hôtel is the only one that’s up there with Régine Crespin, I think... the drained tone on the word travailler is perfect
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Listen to unlimited or download Magnard: Symphonies Nos. 1 & 2 by Philharmonisches Orchester Freiburg in Hi-Res quality on Qobuz. Subscription from £10.83/month.

Playing now off Qobuz-S....CD just out.....sounds gorgeous.... surely the best of the few cycles available (Plasson, Ossonce, Sanderling) - I know them all well), certainly the best sounding, warm, full textured, beautifully balanced....The Ossonce has very good recorded sound, but lacks some of the idiomatic warmth of the newcomer....which manages to gauge that peculiar French/German sound-blend perfectly, and is a must-buy for any Magnardians... here's the slow movement of No.2 (my personal favourite) now.... God, this is lovely...
I missed this first earlier in the year.

Starting at no 1.......I’m ready to be impressed.........

Modern instruments in this rep, me? Well take a look at the BIS booklet... the piano is unusually interesting....
Highly regarded as soloists as well as chamber musicians, Frank Peter Zimmermann and Martin Helmchen are also known for an unostentatious and selfless musicianship which

There is a new Nicola Lefanu disc, The Crimson Bird

It is on Spotty, can't find it on Apple Music.

Edit: my bad, it quite literally is on Apple, even as we speak.

Good week via Qobuz Discovery etc.....
Re the recent k427 BaL thread.....

Obsessed with Mozart now and now and utterly dependent on the chamber/instrumental rep....this looks compelling.....
Listen to unlimited or download Johannes Brahms: Clarinet Sonatas by András Schiff in Hi-Res quality on Qobuz. Subscription from £10.83/month.

There's yet more Beethoven Symphonies in 24/48 from WDR/Janowski and collected Bruckner from BRSO/Jansons (though unadventurous in editions as ever), but I'm not in the mood right now...

Ought to give it a listen , then.

Plenty else to discuss from the Gramophone awards.
The Veress String Trio / Bartok Quintet disc triumphed.

Respect to Weinberg and Edgy, but I haven't clicked with Weinberg yet....
Surprisingly few of the G. Awards have featured in my listening this year.....unusual for me....

Good to see Robert Von Bahr and the brilliantly enterprising Alpha label rewarded......

(Safety Car coming in now at the beautiful Nurburgring..... better concentrate again...)....

See above, after the car racing.
I really enjoyed the Veress. A thing of beauty.

                        Worthy winner the Mirga/Weinberg IMVHO

In her acceptance speech, Mirga said, “Seven years ago I hadn’t heard of the name of Mieczysław Weinberg. During the years since he has become one of the most important composers for me. He is the composer I would like to stay on for the rest of my life. I think that in days of ideological search and loss that we are living through right now, Weinberg stands as a symbol of humanism. His life and work are huge inspirations. Every score I’ve encountered so far is a masterwork. Words by Sandor Végh come to mind: “I don’t make Mozart. Mozart makes me.” I would say the say the same about Weinberg. It’s not that we or I am doing anything with Weinberg. He is doing something with us.”

                          Never heard of this.
It's in the Naxos Library and straight in at No 1 in the listening queue

Founded in 2011, Resonus Classics is a rapidly growing, multi-award-winning, independent classical record label based in the UK, focused on high resolution recordings available on CD, downloads and streaming services. Joining Resonus in 2019 was the new early music label Inventa Records.

That Weinberg disc is the only one of the award winners I've heard so far, and as I said when it came out it didn't do much for me at all. I do like what I know of Veress though, so I will get around to listening to that soon. Thanks for the headsup. Back when the shortlist was published I did my annual eyeroll about none of the items chosen for the "contemporary" category being particularly contemporary...
