Right of course Jayne, the Lutoslawski wasn’t a recommendation, just a review, which I hadn’t even read.

First movement of the Bruckner done. Terrific. Torn between ploughing on and going back....

I never seem to be disappointed by TD . Lovely record cover too. Just want to own it, really.
Its so easy to overdo elements in Bruckner, I think, but here you get the power, and the balance, a combo of agility ( as you say) and the sheer strength at the centre of the music. A bit like the Karajan LvB 6 I was listening to the other night.
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

I am not a number, I am a free man.

And with a French title, so Bryn won't get exercised about at or from.

Well, with the Ravel orchestration, "from" is more pertinent than ever, since it's not all there.

I might see if I can download just La Valse when the time comes.

I was rather disappointed by Roth's raved about Symphonie Fantastique recording. I shall pull it down from the shelves for another listen. The instruments sounded great but as an interpretation in the period field I still found more in the LCP/Norrington - which I think is probably one of his best records.

Which Karajan LvB 6 was that?

The relevant section was replaced with a clip from the rehearsal sessions but the subtle change in ambience is perceptible. In the interim between that and the new recording made in the studios as City University, they have played the work in various places around the world and developed their approach to it. I'm sufficiently fond of the work, which I got to know, via the first recording by Paul Zukofsky and Marianne Schroeder, back in the '80s and now have half a dozen different recordings on optical disc. This new recording and that from Aisha Orazbayeva, Mark Knoop on the "all that dust" label. Darragh Morgan's use of a baroque bow to help achieve the very low dynamics called for by Feldman, tips his recordings in their favour.
I think I might be going to pass on that - I did start to listen, then gave up.

Just having a listen to the new Vikingur Olafsson Debussy / Rameau disc.
It got a glowing review in Gramophone from Harriet Smith. I’m not completely convinced yet about the Rameau on piano, but the combination of works is very effective indeed.

Lovely new Schubert disc from CBSO/Gardner.

The Second Symphony has been an agreeable soundtrack to this strangest of times.
