This one's intriguing me:
The Young Beethoven - Piano Quartets WoO36 | First recording on historical instruments.Meret Lüthi, violinPaolo Antonio Testore, Milan (early 18th century)
Having only recently first discovered these works thanks to the recordings in the wonderful Warner "Complete" box, I was singularly under-impressed by the first two, and then knocked sideways by the much higher quality of the Third. This new recording is on Period instruments, so I'm wondering if the timbres (and the performances themselves) might work their magic and reveal depths in the earlier works than those on the Warner recordings.Numquam Satis!

I’ll nominate this for one of the worst ideas ever put on disc.

Interesting new Eloquences - a box of van Kempen, Knappertsbusch Bruckner - too may duplicates on both for me, but some LSO Colin Davis Mozart (FlCs, Sym 25/29/32/39/40 (but unfortunately not the BBCSO 38/41), may be of interest.

I just find Qobuz' Friday update of New Releases a great way to check what's just out, whether I stream them or go on to buy the disc...
I think I picked up the expression in my old NME days, when in especially good weeks they would refer to their New Album (LP) reviews that way....
LPs always did fit neatly under the arm....(showing them off on the train home....)Last edited by jayne lee wilson; 08-02-20, 18:25.

Originally posted by BoilkWhilst I enjoyed the first two movements of Steven Osborne's Prokofiev 7th Piano Sonata (from Hyperion's War Sonatas new release broadcast 8th Feb), the finale was just plain too fast, if technically impressive. Why play so fast if you're going to lose the musical intricacies of the movement's climax in the process? I think I'll go as far as Spotify with this release, but no farther.
The movement can take a fairly wide range of tempi in my experience—the only recording I know of that actually sounds rushed is Matti Raekallio at 3:00, with Martha Argerich second in line at 3:05 being a knockout performance. And on the other end of things Alexei Lubimov at 4:02 never sounds slow or laboured.
In any case it's Hyperion so you won't get it on Spotify (or any other streaming site). I am fairly satisfied with the Yefim Bronfman & Boris Berman sets I already have so probably won't spend money on another one.

A couple of new release lined up here:
Harrison Birtwistle: Responses (Sweet Disorder) & Gawain's Journey
Symphonieorchester der Bayerischen Rundfunks, Stefan Asbury
Radulescu: The Complete Cello Works
Catherine Marie Tunnell (cello), Ian Pace (piano)
Just started listening to Responses, which sounds like it would make a great Proms work. The Gramophone review mentioned that this isn’t a disc for Birtwistle newbies, but I think I disagree. Responses seems quite a good way in to his world.I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.
I am not a number, I am a free man.
