Listen to unlimited or download Bach : Violin Concertos by Isabelle Faust in Hi-Res quality on Qobuz. Subscription from £10.83/month.
Wow!!
But then what would you expect from such a combo?
Oh good - being a great fan of Faust (love her Mozart concertos set), I took advantage of Europadisc's offer (£9.95 for the 2-CD set) and ordered it yesterday.
Don't hesitate! I've had it on several times already since yesterday.
Got it on Apple Music right now, and had a dabble at a couple of works.
Beautiful playing, but to my ears, the musical direction outshines even the playing, revealing all manner of previously undiscovered nuances. And the sound is exquisite. On headphones it feels just like standing in the middle of the orchestra, basking a sort of Rolls Royce HIPP sound .
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.
Just delving into this on Qobuz....comparing with earlier CD issues...
Can't speak for the vocal items, but all the Munch and Martinon Orchestrals are top-notch stone-cold classics.... shame they included the less recommendable Dutoit 1st Symphony, but - it isn't terrible, and there probably weren't any Erato alternatives... sadly this hasn't been remastered (would have benefited), but the earlier analogue tapings (including the elusive Martinon 2nd) have at 24/96, and the refinement and resolution is audible and pleasurable, even over the very good original Erato CDs (e.g. Munch's unsurpassed probably unsurpassable Symphonies 3&4,which sound truly splendid here).
Quite a few earlier recordings here (Concertos, suites etc) are new (or rare) to CD, but the online note gives little info about the dates/sources ...research required!
It entails a fair bit of duplication for me but the sonic gains seem worthwhile and the box is attractive in itself. Of course if you don't already have the gorgeous Martinon Ballets, the incomparable Munch Symphonies and his Suite en Fa (very rare on disc and the only one to get anywhere near Paray's Mercury stunner), the exquisite chamber music, well.....
(11 CDs for about £27).
important edit! The recording details are all there! At the bottom of each CD jacket rear, in very tiny print...! (Not viewable online...)...
So my treat is complete....!
