This recording may give me a different perspective on the work.
This 2015 release is as full of flair and fascination as you'd expect from Krivine - uncanny ability to switch from lyrical-reflective to full-on brilliance & impact, terrific soloist too.... remarkable orchestral string sound of tensile strength and warmth...

But.... Caveat Emptor to some extent - it is recorded very close and high-level and could drive some systems into fierceness; I had to switch in my pre-amp attenuator (which I do only rarely) to live with it more enjoyably (24/96 download)...

No gainsaying its Bartokian Excellence though!

Thanks Jayne - I think I'll go for this too. I have the technology to tame the fierceness!

      I'll get the download.

I'm very interested in getting more contemporary Bartok (orchestral) recordings.

What a great cover! Such lovely immigrants

No - very disappointing; and no indication of which editions have been used.

Fair comment regarding the 0 and 00 but who completed 9?

All the individual releases were clear about the editions used (so the boxset probably includes that too - probably on the back):

Especially after two recordings of 3/1873 (Dresden & Montreal), I was surprised that he didn't record the 1872 2nd, preferring Haas... and giving a relatively steady, conservative, if very beautifully played, performance.
No details on No.1 yet, but it probably isn't - well, I hope it isn't - the Vienna version... on past form should be 1877 Nowak/Haas.

Schaller's Bruckner recordings have been collected together in a box, as you all probably know......

I didn't know. I will confess I wasn't even aware of the recordings. Thanks for the tip. Incidentally, you can save about a tenner (incl p & p) buying form jpc in Germany

Thank you for that, which clarifies matters considerably - I hadn't realized until last night just how unhelpful the WAB catalogue numbers are for identifying which editions of the symphonies are being used.

I'm more attracted to the Schaller set: 18 discs (even with the choral works) suggests that perhaps - just perhaps - there's a cycle that includes all the various different editions of the symphonies that the composer oversaw, together with performing version(s) of his work on the Finale of the Ninth? That's been something I've been hoping for for a long time.

No, not all the versions, but certainly some rarely heard ones, and including 0 and 00. Two versions of the 9th, each with a completion of the final movement, one by Carragan, the other by Schaller. I have ordered from amazon.co.uk (slightly cheaper and with a more convenient delivery option). It's scheduled for delivery next Tuesday.

... amazon.de looks even cheaper. Less than 40 euros, incl p&p, delivery 17 Feb...

Thaks for that. Duly cancelled and re-ordered, though delivery is a tad problematic. Hopefully a neighbour will take the package in for me.
