    The Basil Lam BBC music guide is a good basic introduction though it’s not really that basic. The Beethoven Quartet Companion and the more recent tome by William Kinderman are more “scholarly “ and academic . The works lend themselves to complex music analysis so be warned! To be honest they are almost beyond “analysis”.

        I remember reading Charles Rosen on the subject, but I can’t remember if it was in his book The Classical Style or elsewhere
