    This was an odd experience for me! I absolutely adored his stereo recording of the 4th symphony. In fact, when I was at school, a friend made me a tape of his Lp. I must have played it dozens of times! Eventually, the cycle(*)came out on a double gatefold vinyl set and I'm sure I bought them with birthday/Christmas money.

    Years later, DG released the 5th and 6th Symphonies on budget CDs. Of course I snapped them up asap and waited for the 4th to be released. And waited and waited... However, as time went passed I realised that in order to obtain the 4th, one had to buy the full price set of the last three symphonies! By this time I was working and bowed to the inevitable and bought this set for £30 odd, duplication the 5th and 6th as I went! Afaik, the 4th never was released as a budget issue although now I see this set in charity shops for a couple of pounds!

    Such is life.

    * Cycle = symphonies 4, 5, & 6.

      All three were released on a DG Originals double CD.

        Eventually but in the 1990's iirc. I'm talking about the dark ages of the 1980's.

          The DG mono recordings were excellent but only 5 & 6 as 4 was conducted by Sanderling, also excellent. I think at the time of release the Mravinsky 4 had the swiftest finale of any recording. On LP I had a 6LP box from the DG anniversary edition which had BSO Tilson Thomas 1, NPO Abbado 2 VSO Atzmon 3 and the LenPO Mravinsky 4 5 6.

            Yes the Sanderling 4th is a terrific performance. I think after listeningbyesterday that maybe the mono performances are more liveable with .

            The stereo 5th and 6th are a bit frenzied for regular listening.

              The Sanderling 4 is similar vintage to the great Rachmaninov 2, which I have always taken as the benchmark. Mono but good DG recording quality.

                Don’t forget the 1982 version on Erato. Wouldn’t choose it over the stereo DG but comes with an excellent Francesca

                  .... and I recently acquired a 1975 5th on Olympia. Haven't sampled yet as I have bought rather too many new recordings lately....

                    Might be OK. Good luck with it. I have some of the Olympia Tchaikovsky recordings which have the obligato parts for flu and cold sufferers. If you can mentally filter those out, they're quite good. Perhaps mine were recorded earlier, though neither yours nor mine would have been after successul vaccines had been produced!

                      I guess I’m an outlier, but I’ve never liked the Mravinsky Tchaikovsky readings. Give me Monteux anytime

                          I had just listened to Pletnev in the Fourth a week ago. Great sounding SACD that left me feeling cold as a performance. Bernstein really shines here in his mid seventies NYP recording
