I was present at this one and remember it well.
I am sorry, Petrushka, and everyone, my error. The Prom was August 29th 1986. How could I have got that wrong? A big OUCH!

To the best of my recollection David Nolan was leading but it could have been Peter Manning, another of our great leaders, I will have to check.

Just uploaded Reiner and the Chicagoans for your delight!!!

Clive Heath transcribes 78 records onto CD and gets rid of the crackle.

I love the bit in the middle where the violin as a will-o-the-wisp is exchanging pleasantries with some hippopotami.

No-one has mentioned Solti's recording in 1977 with the VPO. I've just listened to this, and found it compelling in (yet another) Strauss work I too have struggled to get. In particular, the woodwind motifs depicting Strauss's critics are particularly cheekily played, and Rainer Kuchl is also impressive as the violin soloist.

I see the LPO Proms account of 1986 is listed for September release along with a Haitink Don Juan from the RFH.

Very much my sort of CD!

Mine too! I was present at the Heldenleben performance and remember it well. Brendel played the Beethoven 3rd Piano Concerto in the first half.

And there's a Haitink Creation coming out at much the same time.

Is that the one with the Bavarian Radio SO that's on youTube?

I think The Creation along with Mendelssohn's oratorios are works I've never really connected with - perhaps my loss but they are a long way down my listening list. Heldenleben however is way up there - one of those works like RVW Job and Ravel's Daphnis and maybe Elgar's Falstaff which have a bit of all of what the composer was about - if that makes any sense!

Must admit I don't listen to the Creation all that much. I am more artist led in some instances and I am sure Petrushka would agree that having Bernie H conducting any Haydn on disc feels like a rare treat indeed.

Unfortunately I concur with Cloughie on the Mendelssohn pieces: maybe they are for later in life.

I'm certainly looking forward to hearing Uncle Bernie's Schubert 5 and Mahler 4 - sounds a sunny combination!
