The numbering system if getting out of hand. Already we have 3 number 8's and several 2's. Now we have Roman figures as well.
Perhaps I should go through all Summer BaL's and renumber?

Sounds like a good plan, Eine. I went on to X as a symbol of our confusion. It got out of hand when boarders started digging up Summer BALs from last year (and perhaps the one before).
A superb piece that often accompanies Mrs. PG and myself on long journeys. We have MANY discs of it so it'll be fun to dig them out and do our own personal BAL.

All Summer BaL's now renumbered. Some have been merged with actual BaL threads that came along later.
Yes Curzon/VPO is wonderful but I remember hearing Alfred Brendel and members of the Cleveland quartet playing it wonderfully at a concert as part of Neville Marriner's South Bank Festival in London in the 1970s. The subsequent CD is pretty good too but I see is only available at silly prices
I love the Curzon/Vienna Octet performance but I think I slightly prefer the old Melos Ensemble recording with Lamar Crowson, Emanuel Hurwitz, Ivor McMahon, Cecil Aronowitz and Adrian Beers (another of the delights on the Melos ICON set).

Reason: incorrect name of double-bassist

Thanks for the Melos ICON reminder aeolium - what a treasure trove that 11 CD box is, and available still at a very reasonable £14.99 inc p&p from the grocer.
Hmm ... I thought I had lots of recordings of this, but in fact I have four:
Schubert Quartett with Jorg Demus
Melos Ensemble members with Lamar Crowson
Vienna Octet members with Clifford Curzon
Pro Arte Quartet with Artur Schnabel
I think if I could only have one it would be the Melos Ensemble. Its the version of the work which I first heard and, as usually seems to be the case, is the one which remains the favourite.
