Our Summer BAL 17 - Mozart Exsultate Jubilate K175

At risk of pinching verississimo's concept . How about this lovely work ?

For me - Elly Ameling with the ECO/Leppard is unsurpassed.

Just done my BAL. Only two contenders in my collection - Edith Mathis + Staatskapelle and Hilde GĂĽden + VPO. I enjoyed them about equally, both with beautiful articulation but have a soft spot for GĂĽden (who is also a favourite in Strauss songs.)

Definitely not the Te Kanawa version with Colin Davis, I bought it when it first appeared on LP and it's been constantly praised but I find it very disappointing (and out of tune).

Ameling is good, agreed, recorded in Wembley almost exactly 43 years ago. But I still like Spoorenberg with ASMF and Marriner - the one you start with tends to stay! That was Kingsway recording from 1966.

I have a couple more, one from Schwarzkopf which is disappointing.

                      Gordon,
Yes it's amazing how performances can imprint themselves and the performance you learn a work from can become such a favourite and have such an influence. It's also very interesting to go back to these performances after a few years having heard others.

Unfortunately Kiri's Mozart, although my intro to the works, wasn't a success.

                      Mike

Excuse my interjecting, but isn't K175 Mozart's 5th piano concerto?

                            Absolutely correct!
                            'Exsultate Jubilate' is K165/ 158a.

It is, but I just let it float over me like a Grauniad moment!
