    A lovely story gamba.

I thought you also had the Paul Tortelier Bach Suites. I'm afraid that is my one and only, but admire your choice.

I like me ol' Rostropovich set.
I seem to remember a few years ago, that the BaL recco was Yo Yo Ma.

Your old Slavs set. Would that be the Supraphon?

I have Rostropovich but would like to get Starker. Which set is the best as there seem to be several?

Forgive my potentially re-treading old and familiar ground, but I have tried and tried with Casals, notwithstanding his pioneering status in this music, and I am afraid he does little for me. I don't think it's a case of aversion to "old style" Bach either as I adore Menuhin in the violin partitas and sonatas, Schweitzer and Walcha in the organ works, Karl Richter...

Exactly the same with me, Tapi - and I'd add Fischer's 48 to the list.

fhg, I wish there was a "phew...relieved..." emoticon. I now feel in good company.

A few years ago I bought an old friend (and world renowned Bach scholar ) volume one of the Fischer 48 as a thank you for some work he had put my way, with the proviso that, if he liked it, I would supplement the gift with volume 2. I knew he did not know these recordings.

Ever the gent, he thanked me profusely then remarked "he makes a lot of mistakes". End of conversation. He never asked me about volume 2!

salymap, your memory serves you well. I did have Tortelier & enjoyed them but ultimately gave them away in order to tempt someone, which proved a good move. I am now more than well served with my present choices !

For me it has to be Pierre Fournier.

Yes! Me too. I often do night shifts at the hospital and these discs are my constant companions. (Played very quietly!) It's not playing that draws attention to itself. For me, it simply IS Bach.

I've just Rostropovich on the radio and he 'powers' through the music too much. (IMHO!)
