Tell me if I am being dense, antongould, but I'm afraid I don't understand that list of Haydn symphonies!

IIRC - Symphonies 88 and 104 came out as those most frequently cited by Forumistas who expressed a preference as their "favourite" of the Haydn Symphonies. !02 & 103 were the equal third most popular, 100 the fifth, 101 the sixth ... and so on.

Thank you, gentlemen, for enlightening me! I have to say that I think I would have cited more of the early or middle-period symphonies as my particular favourites.

Not readers, ag; they asked 151 conductors to name their top three (greatest, whatever that means!), and then added up the totals.
Here's the list from the top down: this time the number is the number of the symphony ().

                Beethoven 3
                Beethoven 9
                Mozart 41
                Mahler 9
                Mahler 2
                Brahms 4
                Berlioz Fantastique
                Brahms 1
                Tchaikovsky 6
                Mahler 3
                Beethoven 5
                Brahms 3
                Bruckner 8
                Sibelius 7
                Mozart 40
                Beethoven 7
                Shostakovich 5
                Brahms 2
                Beethoven 6
                Bruckner 7

For me, part of the surprise was that all the Brahms symphonies featured.

(I don't want to hijack this thread, so perhaps if discussion is to ensue we need to start a new one?)

It's quite a shock to see:
Mahler 6 not featured; no Haydn; no Nielsen; no Vaughan Williams; only one Sibelius.

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Recently supplemented my not so large Haydn symphony collection (31, 59, 73, Harnoncourt; 60, 70, 90, Rattle; 93–104 Colin Davis; whatever BBC MM ones there might be) with the English Sinfonia/Groves 92, c/w 104, and rather like it!

PS: The BBC MM CDs include the AAM/Hogwood 76 and 77!
