Our Summer BAL No 76 Mozart Piano Concerto No 23 K488

Inspired by the performance yesterday evening I thought after trawlibgvthrough the BAL thread and there not being any sign of it that this might be a good work to discuss .

Hatfuls of terrific recordings I know but Perahia’s recording remains very close to my heart.

A bit long in the tooth now, but Pollini/VPO/Bohm showed both artists off to best advantage.

Another oldie, Brendel-Marriner. No need to explore any further.

Agreed. That was my first ever Mozart piano concerto recording (coupled with No 20 on LP) and although I've bought several others since none satisfies as much as Brendel.

Brendel/Marriner for me, too, even though it's split over 2 CDs!

Yes, that's a serious irritant. Prompts me to have a search to see if it's available on CD without that drawback.

It's available on eBay as a Penguin Classic and also as a Philips Solo.

I’ll have to get this one, having heard it at the Proms.

Careful, BBM, once infected you might get long-Mozart.

I never got the love for the Brendel/Marriner recordings. I found the conducting dull . I much preferred not only Perahia but the later Brendel/Mackerras recordings but I don’t think they ever recorded K488 together.

                    Other favourites - Fischer/Boult , Schiff/Vegh, Shelley/LMP ,Curzon/Kertesz and of course Kempff/Leitner.

Also the Rubinstein recording in that mega cheap Sony box.

                        La Grande Référence....

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: The 27 piano concertos (including Nos 7 & 10 for two and three pianos). Also included are the three unnumbered concertos after J.C. Bach (K 107),

..... you will have to go a long way round if you want to avoid them..."
                        (Basil Bunting)

19/23 c/w is one the best in this series.....

I wouldn't know who to choose between Bilson, Brautigam, Sofronitsky (V) and Immerseel. Luckily I don't have to. (& nor do I ever have to hear this music played on an instrument Mozart couldn't have imagined existing!)

I remember a fascinating South Bank Show broadcast on ITV in around 1974 which filmed the Brendel/Marriner recording of the Piano Concerto No 27.

It isn't split in the Philips Complete Mozart Edition.
