There are three Ashkenazy recordings to choose from CSO Solti, VPO Mehta and Cleveland directed from the grand! Take your choice - all good!

Plus a DVD set with LPO/Sir Bernard Haitink. Lovely archive material.

... or the televised Beethoven cycle with Marriner & ASMitF, which I thought was little more than routine?

Nobody mentioned Schnabel? Especially good in this concerto I think, spontaneous and poetic, and wonderfully rapt at end of 1st movement cadenza. My more 'modern' favourites are Gilels/Ludwig, Pollini/Bohm, and Arrau/Haitink.

Perahia/Haitink for me (and I'm not a Haitink lover by any means)
Tried a few others and Kempff/Leitner were attractively done. The one real downer was Pletnev, wayward stuff, a real disappointment
