Our Summer BAL 54: Brahms Concerto for violin and cello

It is so hot it seems that a Summer BAL is justified .

I know we have some real BALs to go but amazed to see this does not seem to have been done on BAL at least in Presto's living memory .

So many great recordings and I have rather a lot of them .

    Particular favourites Suk/Navarra/Ancerl on Supraphon
Stern/Rose / Walter mono on Columbia - a recent discovery of an old classic
    Oistrakh/Rostropovich/Szell and Oistrakh/Fournier/Galliera
    Campoli/Navarra/Barbirolli

Which would be your library choice - forced to choose I would say Oistrakh/Fournier.

Excellent idea! I think I might well go along with your library choice.

This is a work that, iirc, got a lot of stick in this parish recently. I didn't really understand why since it's a work I've always been very fond of. Although I have many 'official' recordings of it, I've always liked the BBCMM cd of Lisa Batiashvilli and Alban Gerhard.

      Lovely music.

Likewise, though perhaps I should mention that I have more time than most for the Beethoven Triple Concerto too. Wonderfully convivial, both.

How bizarre to give this concerto stick ?

I have that BBCMM disc too - with is rather bizarre confrontational cover .

I agree - lovely work - many good 'uns - I like the Schneiderhan Starker with Fricsay on DG.

I left off the Mutter/Meneses/Karajan which is another cracking performance .

This my only version currently, it seems. I used to have a recording on LP from 1952 of Boskovsky and Brabec with VPO/Furtwaengler, but where did it go?

If I had to choose, it would be Campoli/Navarra/ Barbirolli by a very small margin.

Never an absolute favourite, I did not own a recording of this work until about 20 years ago. I got Maria Kliegel and Ilya Kaler on the new Naxos budget label which suited my budget, severely strained at the time by mortgage and kids ... and it was recommended in the Penguin Guide. It turned out to be pretty good, if probably not a BaL winner. The coupling (Schumann Cello) also filled a gap.

It is a sound recording but very much in the second rank in my opinion . Played the Suk/Navarra /Ancerl again last night forgotten quite how special it was .

Heard the Double Concerto in concert several times. Pleasant but it never moves me.
