      Quite the linguist, aren't we!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Are you talking LSO (stereo late 50s) or CAO (mono early 50s)?

        Actually both are sounding great.

The Barbirolli and Szell repeats are deliberate as there are two recordings.
Please feel free to add my omissions.
As far as I am concerned at this stage of my life I am not changing from No9 and those well meaning pedants who change the nomenclature do no favours in confusing a new generation getting to know their Schubert.
There are couple of omissions that are among favourites:
            Bernstein, Bavarian Radio SO (DVD)
Böhm, Staatskapelle Dresden (reissued in the recent 'late recordings' box)
            Mackerras, SCO (Telarc)

Then there's Boult - at least two earlier versions are still available from amazon (the BBCSO on Beulah and BBCSO live on BBC Legends). Not sure either is preferable to the one listed, but it's worth knowing about them.

As for choosing one recording, pretty much impossible for me. The Mackerras/Philharmonia disc is wonderful, and the Bernstein DVD is pretty special too. I'd want it on old instruments as well - OAE/Mackerras for preference. I'm also extremely fond of the old Jochum/DG set. And then there's Furtwängler... And so it goes on!

I love the Great C Major but find the repeats in the otherwise wonderful recent Orchestra Mozart/Abbado recording just too much to take.

My default recording has been Staatskapelle Dresden and Karl Böhm for many years.

That is my favorite and has been since it came out. It hadn't been reissued in CD until the collection called Haitink: The Phillips Years. I bought it primarily for the Schubert but of course there are a lot of great recordings (Mahler and bruckner, especially) in that set.

That sounds interesting. I wasn't aware that BBohm recorded with Dresden

It's a live recording issued on LP in 1980 and later on CD. The performance was given on January 12 1979 just three weeks after I met Böhm after an LSO concert in London so it has a special resonance for me.

He recorded a lot with Dresden, not least because he was Music Director in Dresden from 1934 to 1942, making many records with the Staatskapelle at the time, and he returned very regularly after the war. I'm sure you've probably come across his mono Richard Strauss from the 1950s in Dresden (Heldenleben and so on), and there are some wonderful other things, not least a terrific Fidelio, Rosenkavalier, the Schubert 9 mentioned several times now, and quite a bit more.

Can't wait for the forthcoming Prom performance!

Are you going, Alison? I have my ticket...

I recall a superb Prom performance from Haitink in 1977 (via R3) so hoping for big things from this one.

There was a really good recording on LP by Loughran and the Halle on ASV. As with the Beethoven Symphony set of similar vintage I'd love to see it issued on CD.
