Please feel free to add my omissions.
As far as I am concerned at this stage of my life I am not changing from No9 and those well meaning pedants who change the nomenclature do no favours in confusing a new generation getting to know their Schubert.
Bernstein, Bavarian Radio SO (DVD)
Böhm, Staatskapelle Dresden (reissued in the recent 'late recordings' box)
Mackerras, SCO (Telarc)
Then there's Boult - at least two earlier versions are still available from amazon (the BBCSO on Beulah and BBCSO live on BBC Legends). Not sure either is preferable to the one listed, but it's worth knowing about them.
As for choosing one recording, pretty much impossible for me. The Mackerras/Philharmonia disc is wonderful, and the Bernstein DVD is pretty special too. I'd want it on old instruments as well - OAE/Mackerras for preference. I'm also extremely fond of the old Jochum/DG set. And then there's Furtwängler... And so it goes on!

Originally posted by richardfinegold View PostThat is my favorite and has been since it came out. It hadn't been reissued in CD until the collection called Haitink: The Phillips Years. I bought it primarily for the Schubert but of course there are a lot of great recordings (Mahler and bruckner, especially) in that set.

I recall a superb Prom performance from Haitink in 1977 (via R3) so hoping for big things from this one."The sound is the handwriting of the conductor" - Bernard Haitink
