I'm surprised too, Barbi. My excuse is that I've been to Botany Bay. Back home, I played my only extant recording of the work - Stravinsky, 1911, rec 1960 - and found it rather stately.

So time for something new... Abbado? Rattle? Dorati? Bernstein? Boulez? Dutoit? Roth?

    I'm confused...

Of course, when I further interrogated my 'library', I found that I have NYPO/Bernstein on LP. And its terrific IMO.

But what exactly is it? The front cover says that it's 'Petrushka Suite', while the back cover calls it 'Petrushka Ballet'. I think it's the whole shooting match, but which version?

I don't have scores to hand, and the cover notes have the usual Stravinsky paragraphs, 'apropos Petrushka', which cover both 1911 and 1947.

I do prefer the cornet , of the 1947 version. That has more warmth than the trumpet. The trumpet can sound too harsh in this passage, imo.

The cornet is in the 1911 edition and the trumpet in the 1947.

Scheduled to be a real BaL on 8 November 2014, with Martin Cotton (so November's BBC Music Magazine tells me).

It seemed perverse for comments on the actual BAL to be on this thread - so I've moved them to that thread (in case anyone's looking)
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                  Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

There weren't that many comments on the 'official' BAL thread - a lot fewer than usual.
