Our Summer BAL 39- Stravinsky Petrushka

Cannot see this has been on BAL for a while - no sign on Presto

Versions I suppose come up 1911 /1947 or a mixture

    I have three I love

    1911 Monteux- Boston SO

    1947 CBSO/Rattle

and Dorati's Decca version where he generally used the 1947 but added some bits of 1911 he liked best !

Like your choices, Barbs, but would suggest the Stereo Mercury Minneapolis Dorati but the one I love is CSO/Levine which for whatever reason has never appeared on CD.

My default recording is LSO/Abbado but BPO/Haitink and LPO/Haitink aren't far behind. I really love the return to the Shrovetide Fair in the 4th Tableau in the Abbado recording - it all goes with a tremendous swing and it's the 1911 version too.

All sound choices Pet, but to my ears lack some of the raw passion Petrouchka needs - Mehta, Muti, Bernstein and Ansermet add this.

Would love to rise to the bait and do the same for this as I did for the Symphony of Psalms, but time is too precious at present, I'm afraid, since I have just agreed to become Chairman of the trustees of a local charity (Cancer Support and Therapy Centre) and need to get up to speed with that!

From memory, I like the Boulez/Cleveland and Dutoit/LSO performances very much, both 1911; also Bernstein/NYPO, 1947.

Agree that `raw passion' is needed!
Looking forward to reading comments from others.

(Note: I have asked for thread title to be changed to 39, as we already have a 38!)

Ansermet, Bernstein in New York, Kreizberg, Rosbaud but, above all, the recent version from Les Siecles and Francois-Xavier Roth all do it for me.

Excellent list HD Mind, Abbado has inexplicably been left out.

I've purchased the Roth/Les Siecles disc but not listened to it yet.

Heroic work, HD. I learned the piece from the Ozawa recording and I still think it holds up well. MTT is the Pianist.

As for the Roth record - positive reviews in Gramophone and IRR but SJ and AmcG were sniffy about it on CD Review as I recall .

I have that complete Stravinsky Edition buit I do not have any others. Abbado always strikes a vein with me but 1911? Not sure.

But surely you would rather have a cornet than the trumpet of the1947 scaled down orchestration?

I am more than surprised that this wonderful piece has received so few contributions - perhaps a where is everyone thread ?
