What with Proms, heatwaves and work I've completely missed this thread.
The Bernatein double CD set mentioned by ER is indeed a cracker and is one among many recordings I have of the piece including Stokowski and the Philadelphia Orchestra recorded in November 1933.
Among modern versions I like Haitink and the LPO in fine Decca sound as well as Rozhdestvensky and the USSR Min of Culture Orchestra for the Soviet brass and up-front percussion."The sound is the handwriting of the conductor" - Bernard Haitink
