I've got four recordings of this piece:

        Barshai
        Bernstein
        Haitink
        Jansons

Frankly, I would be hard pressed to pick a favourite ... so I won't!

....unless you had Ormandy as well!

You'd have thought that the Berlin Philharmonic and Rattle would deliver the goods but I find theirs a fussily tepid account.

What with Proms, heatwaves and work I've completely missed this thread.

The Bernatein double CD set mentioned by ER is indeed a cracker and is one among many recordings I have of the piece including Stokowski and the Philadelphia Orchestra recorded in November 1933.

Among modern versions I like Haitink and the LPO in fine Decca sound as well as Rozhdestvensky and the USSR Min of Culture Orchestra for the Soviet brass and up-front percussion.
