    Our Summer BALs 2014

We're coming to that time again. Some basic groundrules I propose:

    1. Anyone can start a thread (including Thropplenoggin if he's still in the building)
    2. Don't start a new thread within six days of the last one (so as not to flood the market)
    3. If Alpie provides lists of runners and riders as in past years, we are to be truly grateful
    4. There are no groundrules (only a few wishes).

I did this at first, but subsequently decided that everyone needs a holiday.

        How about:

        - the member who starts a thread will provide a basic list either of what s/he already has, is contemplating, or simply as an example
        - the member who starts a thread will state some points s/he would like the discussion to focus to begin with.

It might be an idea to avoid works for which there are contentious (and hence potentially distracting) issues such as editions (e.g., Bruckner symphonies) or HIPP/non-HIPP performances.

Oh, I think we particularly enjoy those, Pulci.

True enough, but it still might be better to be more restrictive from the start, such as JSB Goldberg Variations: piano versions.

Hmm. We've already had the Goldberg Variations in a Summer BaL, later merged with a "real" BaL. But as an example of how something might be discussed, it may be worthwhile.

I think therefore a groundrule 5 might be: Pay attention to what's already been Our Summer BALed.

Sorry! It was indeed intended only as an example of a restriction (i.e., not harpsichord or accordion versions).

Is there a list of previous offerings?

Indeed there is - now up to 33 - see this section - http://www.for3.org/forums/forumdisp...Our-Summer-BAL

So what's wrong with accordion versions? Yesterday Simon Rowland-Jones mentioned that one of the most inspirational performers he'd ever seen/heard was Astor Piazzolla - maybe he's done a bandoneon version!

                          OK!
                          Bad example/wording.
I was merely trying to offer a suggestion of how to keep a thread on track.
Perhaps better to have suggested something like Pulcinella (complete) and Pulcinella (suite) needing to be considered separately.

Just a minor Hosting point. I may amend the headings slightly for consistency. For example - on the Symphony of Psalms thread, I've added the number to facilitate the chronology.

If we cannot start the next one yet - can I put in a vote for Shostakovich's Symphony No 1 - as I have just been listening to the vintage classic Efrem Kurtz recording as I have had enough German triumph for one evening
