Link to our BaL thread here:

10.30am Building a Library Puccini: Madame Butterfly Puccini's searing tragedy about a young geisha who falls in love with an American naval officer has been a staple in the recording studio for many decades. Nigel Simeone picks his ultimate recommendation to buy, download or stream. Available recordings (or a selection) to

France Musique, apparently no longer en grève, have posted the details of Sunday's La Tribune:-

Les coquetteries d’Anna Moffo, le sens tragique d’Angela Gheorghiu : Thomas Dolié, Pauline Sommelet et Jean-Philippe Thiellay élisent la version de référence de Madame Butterfly de Giacomo Puccini.

Tried and tested route for me: Pavarotti....Freni....Karajan....VPO. No better soloists (brush over the Sharpless!), exquisite orchestral detail (produced by Chris Raeburn, engineered by the famous Solti Ring trio: Parry, Lock and Law).

Butterfly is one of the few Puccini operas I haven't a DVD recording of....any ideas? No mimed films of studio recordings eg. Domingo/Freni!

Just bumping this up in the hope there is someone who's not out in the sun this afternoon!

Like BaL it's probably on at an inconvenient time.

              Six contenders are:-

              a.Scotto/Domingo/Maazel....
              b.de los Angeles/di Stefano/Gavazzini.....
              c.Callas/Gedda/Leinsdorf....
              d.Freni/Pavarotti/Karajan.....
              e.Gheoghiu/Kaufmann/Pappano....
              f.Callas/Gedda/Karajan....

Those that thought this programme was prejudiced against British works, look out for Elgar 'Enigma Variations' in two weeks!

Edit. I'm sure version c. is not Callas as printed....it's probably Anna Moffo as the sleeve shows.

With the recording by French conductor Pierre Monteux in the running?
(Apologies: I should have waited for the thread to be launched!)

No Barbirolli vastly superior to Maazel !

                  Will Monteux with Enigma ?

Never mind, perhaps they'll make up for the oversight by choosing Schön Sir John's Enigma in two weeks' time!

How did you get the list of the contenders before the programme had finished?

Do you listen on FM in France Micky? Or online?

If you go to the France Musique (from the Radio France site) website select 'Schedule' (with a right arrow) under the 'playing now' programme panel and then top right 'More' (may come up as 'Plus') the 'Grille de Programme' page comes up, scroll down to find 'La Tribune' at 16.00 (may show as 4pm), tap on it and the programme page comes up, scroll down to find the six contenders marked A to F. (An easier way might be to tap on my original post at #5 above and just scroll down to find A to F)

I've just checked and the display is just as it comes up at the beginning of the programme (nb. This info is not available until a couple of minutes into the programme).

Today's info was incorrect. When C started I knew that it wasn't Callas, but as it was Leinsdorf cond. it was obvious it must be Anna Moffo.

Thanks, Roger. I do listen online but didn't know that the contenders were displayed on the page just after the programme has begun. But as you say, approach with caution as the details were incorrect.

We're thinking of just posting each weeks Tribune on the general BaL Français thread as you may have seen already....any thoughts to add on that?

Rousseau's report on Madame Butterfly just posted:-

My google translate has 'The pulp of Anna Moffo's tone does not erase her simpering'!

In future the programme pages of La Tribune will be posted on the general La Tribune: Un BaL Français thread. Look out for Schubert Piano Trio No.1.
