Gibbs, Avgarde Gallery and the Free Trade Hall were only reason for Manchester's existence in the 1960s...

Fond memories of Gibbs (and Forsyth's in Deansgate) but my LvB 7 with Kleiber came from HMV.

Richardfinegold: I don't have the Solti/CSO and, alas, it seems difficult to get hold of, but it sounds right up my street. Will continue the search.

Forsyth's is still alive and well - still one of the best music shops around and not sucked into the Borg (Music Sales ) Has a good range of CDs too.

Has Monteux's 7th with the LSO been mentioned yet? It was one of my earliest purchases on a Victrola LP and is still much loved.

It seems to have been on a Decca twofer (or is that a different recording?), but seems to be generally nla currently.

Never regretted that either.
As we're talking Britannia, I joined in 1980 solely for the bribe of the box set (LPs) of the Bohm Beethoven symphonies on DG. I love this set to this day. I ordered the bare minimum allowed, then cancelled my membership at the earliest moment allowable. As for Britannia, I guess they went to the board years ago? One would kind of hope so, with all the screw-ups they made.

I used to work at the A.G. on Saturdays, as a teenage schoolboy in the 1960s. Mr Denis Baxter initially gave me some 'pocket money' but very soon I was ( by my choosing) being 'paid in LPs'

Indeed but apparently Australian Eloquence plans to re-release his LSO and VPO cycle this year sometime.

Well. er... 'neglible hair' these days but back then it was a sort of 'skimpy mousy', definitely not red.

Oh, not you then. The one I remember from the late 60s, working for pocket money, had rich ginger hair and spectacles.

Britannia Music Co Ltd is a dormant company, last accounts filed 31/12/2005.

I seem to have had better experiences of them than earlier posters. The Solti Ring (CD) was my introductory bargain too, and I managed the minimum purchases for a fair while. In the end they were content for me to order just the odd disc that I fancied from the monthly catalogue, especially their sale bargains (mainly the unsold weird stuff!). Don't recall being sent discs I hadn't ordered, though that could be the explanation for some discs on my shelves that I can't recall when or why I bought!
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

                            Gibbs was a haven.
Spent what seemed like hours in there browsing through stuff that I couldn't afford.
Wasn't there a really good record shop in the Piccadilly Hotel complex or thereabouts, can't remember the name,or memory playing tricks ?

There was a branch of Andy's Records in the late 80s early 90s
