Oh come on. Why not follow Stunsworth's lead and download it in lossless wma format from Qobuz now. The wma files are quickly and easily converted to WAV or other PCM format for burning to a couple of CD-Rs. You know it makes sense.

Just for information, you can also download in ALAC and FLAC format.

In addition, it appears that anything you buy remains available for additional download should you 'loose' the original.

Obviously downloads aren't for everyone, but it provides an additional choice for those who are interested.

Indeed and saves shelf space! I quite like the rather amusing, as I find it, translation of the text. Adds to the character of the work.

Tempting to download the ALAC version as a début for my shiny new AirportExpress

I have now listened to this BAL and thought it was a classic - and confirmation that its one-hour duration is a minimum for a sensible discussion of a much-recorded and lengthy work.

I shan't be parting with my CDs of the Karajan for the sole reason that ferney mentions:

the incomparable Gundula Janowitz

It's so special that I'm surprised IB didn't give it an outing. But you can't have everything.

I did like the sound of the soloists on the Jacobs version he chose (in contrast to some of the others, even in the final shortlist. Didn't like the sound of Sandrine Piau singing in English at all).

I liked much of what I heard from the Jacobs version, but sadly I was put off by his soprano - too fruity for my taste. I preferred Piau despite the diction issues.

I agree with you and Ferney about Janowitz on the Karajan set - I love her voice, and can overlook the lack of agility for that gorgeous tone.

It's the version I have and it's fine. It's to a work I listen to much or would want alternative recordings.

I invested in a very cheap copy of the Fruhbeck de Burgos and what a delight it is - not at all sluggish in tempo , he really is such a fine conductor of choral repertoire and particularly lovely singing from Jose van Dam .
