BaL 28.12.13 - Haydn's The Creation

I see that there are a few secondhand CD copies of the CFP Fruhbeck de Burgos version on Amazon going for a song .

I recall seeing Fruhbeck conduct the Philharmonia and a top team of soloists around 1970 and being so, so impressed both with the work and the performance. But aside from that, it was the first time I'd been to Fairfield Hall in Croydon, and being amazed how much better the acoustic there was (is) compared with the RFH.

The Hengelbrock version is the one I play most - though, for a completely different view, I enjoy going back to Willcocks (great solo team: Harper, Tear, Shirley-Quirk).

Similar forces, so should give an idea of the sound to be expected. Roll on February. There are extracts from the Jacobs video recording of Die Schopfung on YouTube, but not the whole thing (more's the pity, with it being temporarily out of the catalogue, officially).

A particularly informative BaL so far.

I have just listened to a recording of today's BAL and agree that it was excellent. Perhaps he played rather too much of the bloated recordings which we knew would be eventually discarded, but I know it's difficult to please everyone. I was amazed to hear the Rattle English version had the original quaint language "corrected" - I would have thought that the stilted language is part of the charm. (The Heavens are Telling was changed so that it made more sense - but lost something of its character in the process. Perhaps IB should have warned prospective purchasers about that.)
I don't think I would want to hear the Jacobs recording too often, so I won't be rushing to order the CDs in February.

Incidentally, wasn't this further proof that the most effective BALs are still the one-person scripted ones? Let's hope we've seen the last of the MacGregor chit-chat sessions.

Oh come on. Why not follow Stunsworth's lead and download it in lossless wma format from Qobuz now. The wma files are quickly and easily converted to WAV or other PCM format for burning to a couple of CD-Rs. You know it makes sense.

It's like riding a bike, with the free software available today via the Internet acting as stabilisers. Mind you, I rejected stabilisers as a kid, learning to ride going round in circles.

I still like CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray, it's just I sometimes burn my own from downloaded recordings.
