Agree with EA. A very fair BaL. It had me glued to the radio from start to finish, and that doesn't happen often these days.

jEG certainly has many merits. It's a pity it sounds as though it was recorded using an H4.

NA has always been so eloquent - I used to adore his contributions to Gramophone and fortunately he still pops up every now and then in IRR. His book about Baroque Music is similarly enjoyable.

I'm also delighted to see that Nicholas Anderson is to be the reviewer - a passionate and hugely knowledgeable authority on baroque music.

As others have said, what an excellent BAL; he should be used as an example by other more gimmick-prone reviewers. This sounded like R3 as I remember it - and as it should remain.

I think one of the reasons that this BaL worked so well was that NA used such short and specific musical illustrations, and so was able to pack in far more than is usually the case.

NA also has an absolute love and passion for music of this period - I once had the pleasure of going to a series of six weekly lectures by him on Rameau's operas. His enthusiasm was infectious and I will always be grateful to him for opening my ears to that extraordinary composer.

I agree with all said here. An excellent programme and a wise choice- certainly my favourite version of the ones I've heard. I used to have it on a tape cassette, BWV 21 on one side and the Magnificat on the other which meant a great deal of rewinding since I much preferred BWV 21 to the other. In particular I used to listen to the chorus Sei nun wieder zufrieden, meine Seele repeatedly. Kujiken's performance is a joy.

Indeed...he is "old school" R3, thus I would have thought in grave danger of being considered too intellectual!
