Just got round to listening to Johnsons op and he harped on about the 1960 Mravinsky BBC recording and the sound quality not up to scratch but failed to mention the better 1982 live from Leningrad hall version with the LPO .I assume its one of the two still available(I have it on Philips from 20 years ago) .For me no recordings have or will match the terror and emotion, which Shostakovich composed,and the master gives us,

I ordered a cheapo one on Alto thinking it was the 1960, but it is the 1982 version. It corrects a blanket speed/ pitch error in the original Philips mastering, as does the similarly priced Regis.

It is a great recording - one of the first performances that made me understand what all the fuss was about Shostakovich !

Have only listened to it once so far, and not with 100% attention I'm afraid. It was certainly an excellent performance and recording, not very obviously 'live', very precise in getting all the notes in the right places and there was the right sort of atmosphere that I found so totally lacking in the Petrenko BaL-winner, as reported above. Perhaps I was secretly hoping for more of a 'live' atmosphere, and more feeling of being right on the edge of emotional if not technical-instrumental breakdown? If it's not really out of that mould I shall have to listen to it more as a sort of 'super studio' recording then an obviously live one perhaps.

Will therefore have to listen to it a few more times to decide whether it's absolutely the best recording I own. I was brung up on Previn, then Kondrashin, on LP, followed by Haitink and Barshai (the cheapo box set) with Gauk as a random purchase. Wouldn't discard any in a hurry except maybe the Gauk.

As a result of this BaL I've also bought the Bournemouth Barshai which I'd listened to closely just before the Mravinsky arrived and had found very, very impressive. So by the time the Mrav landed I was suffering from a slight overdose

I've been looking for a download of the 1982 performance(I've lost me CD since moving overseas) Only one I can find of a mravinsky 8 is this one on Itunes ( a bargain at 1.79) and not sure what performance this dates from,anyone know and if the 1982 is around as a download?

There's a woeful lack of information on the iTunes link which makes me glad I don't do downloads. I'd want more information as to exactly what I was getting before taking the plunge. For all anyone knows this might be either the 1982 Leningrad, the 1960 London or even the 1948 Leningrad studio recording. Not good enough.

The timings of the iTunes performance are almost identical to those of the London/BBCLegends disc (and the i-Tunes source is named "Best Buy Classics"!):

REGIS: 25' 15"; 6' 21"; 6' 25"; 9' 51"; 13' 19" = 61' 11"

* = the last three Movements are put on a single "track" without catalogue points.

Yes,We can listen to three short samples on Itunes.It sounded as if it maybe stereo so that discounts the 1948 version but I didnt hear any coughing so thats why I didnt think it was the BBC recording,but then again the samples were short at 1 minute.

THought I would invest in another recording of this work, and found out that there are various editions of the Haitink available used at pocket money prices on Amazon.
Looking forward to giving this a blast.
