"The age-old question: who is the boss? The conductor or the soloist?"

How typical of Bernstein, and a harbinger of things to come, that he does not admit the other possibility: that the composer might come into the equation.

.... still don't get what "a missing 78 in the first movement" means... You mean it was recorded straight on to 78s and someone's lost/smashed one of the "master" discs?
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

That's what it says in the CD notes. The music fades down and then fades up and you're into the second movement.

Then again: ... still, better some of it than none of it I s'pose.

There's a problem on the 69? Do the good people of Canning Town know?

Not many posts linking vinteuil to Canning Town, I bet

                        Hmm. No great surprises there.

So the Freire/Chailly wins. I am not surprised these recordings were raved about when they came out and I bought them then . I like the performance but I thought it was a bit safe and did not quite get why they were so lauded .

The interesting record this morning for me was the Kovacevich/Davis. I have and love his later recording with Sawallisch and shortly after that came out saw him play the concerto magnificently at the RFH but I think I might have to add the Davis- the extracts played sounded very special indeed .

I'd like to propose Angelich as the soloist in a HIP recording, on an Erard, with Les Siecles and Maitre Roth: a couple of years ago I heard them in Beethoven's 5th Concerto, and the sound was a revelation. (I didn't know that Brahms liked Erard pianos - I had assumed a Bosendorfer would have been his choice).

Agreed. Sounded just a bit to me as if HS may well have made up her mind from the off that Szell / Chailly would be up there. The Abbado/BPO was so good, I was a tad surprised. But the Chailly / Nelson F recording certainly no slouch. For once, listening to the last hour of Essential Clunkies on Monday might be worth it!

I slightly take issue with AMcG saying the Freire is at midprice when amazon has it at c.£18, even if a 2cd set........
