Brendel also recorded it with Haitink in the 1970s I think, available as a download on a three-fer.

I recall the Zimerman/Rattle got some rather lukewarm reviews and a typically bitchy one from Hurwitz on Classics Today .
That live Brendel is indeed a striking performance that may surprise some of his critics. I found a cheap used copy of the Zimerman/Bernstein Brahms 1 - not a library choice ! It has much beautiful playing in it from both Zimerman and orchestra and for much of it there is a chamber music like delicacy which is very different to many barnstomers . It is pretty slow though and in places almost comes to a full stop - glad to have it though.

The Horowitz./Walter performance was recorded live and there's a missing 78 in the first movement. However the playing of the slow movement and finale make it well worth hearing - a treasure.
