I've just listened to No. 2. See my comments over at the New Releases thread.

My copy arrived today and I was mightily impressed by all concerned. Very good performances indeed and every bit as good as the 'competition'. Looking at the recording dates I realised I was in Salzburg whilst they were being recorded - by goodness it was cold!

Great value for £9.99 for two discs. Cheaper than Naxos!

It turns out I've got both Brahms' with Artur Schnabel so I thought I would give them a go starting with the 1st which I'm not completely happy with in terms of the state of wear of the discs. However I've come to really enjoy the performance and I hope some of you will too. The passion of the orchestral playing which gets us going sets up quite an expectation and to my mind Schnabel does not disappoint with his entry or, indeed, subsequently. He is particularly affecting in the slow movement with a lovely singing tone.

Clive Heath transcribes 78 records onto CD and gets rid of the crackle.

will take you to the Classical page, the Concerto is the last in the list.

I just read the review of the Hough/Wigglesworth set in Fanfare. The critic, Jerry Dubins, raves about the set.

Superb! If you love these works, do not hesitate. I was amazed to find I was in Salzburg during the period they were being recorded. Goodness, it was cold!

Interested to read a dissenting opinion from Richard Osborne in his review in 2015 of Barenboim's new Brahms concerto recordings - that "the hard driven Award winning Freire/Chailly recordings seem to say less and less at each new hearing . That is pretty much my experience of them. I do not understand what all the fuss is about.

Must admit I’ve gone off it..if I want hard driven and truly exciting (in the first at least) it has to be Szell / Fleisher for me, a true classic, dated sound notwithstanding..

I was listening to the high res version of Gilels/Jochum today. An incredible sounding recording from the early seventies

I think both of the recordings are still, one of the best in the catalogue.

Wasn't Joachim somewhat more associated with the Violin concerto than the Piano concertos, Richard?
I think that you mean Jochum.

                            Nice one, though.

...and I don’t think there are many recordings!

The Gilels / Jochum I have on vinyl - and is a superb performance . I think Gilels reputation has faded a bit - quite unjustly . He’s rarely played on R3 . I wonder whether it’s the Richter effect - he’s played all the time . I also have the Kovachevich / Sawallisch which is excellent also.
