The Walton Heifetz / Goossens isn't mentioned in the list in #1, even though it's available on Naxos and, as you say, is coupled with the Elgar VC. On the earlier Biddulph release (WHL 016) it was coupled with RVW's "London" Symphony, also with Goossens and the Cincinnati Orchestra in 1941. This performance reverted to the first published edition of the score (1920) that had several fascinating minutes of extra music which RVW omitted when revising and re-publishing the score later. Many musicians (Boult, Bernard Herrmann and others) much regretted the cuts. In any case, the Goossens recording is wonderfully vital and for me is an 'essential classic'!

Yes indeed. Can we persuade him to stay, must be the big question?!

N Kennedy and J Bell are the two in my collection, never particularly felt the need to look any further
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

            According to my notes:
            Heifetz Goosens Cincinnati 18/02/1941
            Heifetz Walton Philharmonia 27/7/1950

It's a shame the wonderful Francescatti recording isn't listed.

Yes - that is another cracker . It was available cheaply second hand recently .

I have Joshua Bell's recording - it is very civilised but not in the league of Ida H or KWC's accounts . I would also place it behind Heifetz,Francescatti and Kennedy .

Anyone who does not have Ida Haendel's coupling of the Britten and Walton is missing a real classic of the gramophone.

Yes indeed, the Francescatti / Ormandy / Philadelphia performance is a must-have. It was coupled on a Sony CD with other Walton works conducted by Andre Kostelanetz, a much under-rated conductor, as his effervescent readings of the 'Johannesburg Festival Overture' and 'Capriccio Burlesco' readily prove ...

This one, Bbm? (I have it on a Cassette Tape - how old am I!)

Previn's had "left" the LSO by the '80s when he recorded this - I think he was the RPO's Principal (?Guest?) Conductor at the time. (One of his last recordings for EMI, too.)

I had my cassette recorder with me for a spell in hospital, once! A life saver.

Yes that's the one I have!

I knew I forgot something. That's the recording with which I started to get acquainted with the work, but I lost that cassette-tape (couple with Sibelius, btw) long ago.....

While I find quite a bit of Walton's oevre rather hard to take, this violin concerto seems to me really first rate by any standards. And Kyung-Wha Chung with the LSO/Previn absolutely magnificent.

That's the one on Decca isn't it? C/W Stravinsky's VC?

If you enter "walton violin concerto francescatti" (without the quote marks) as your search term at amazon.co.uk, in addition to an LP and a somewhat pricey copy the Sony Essential Classics re-issue CD, there is a third CD item described simply as "Walton - Orchestral Works". I suspect that this is the very same Sony Essential Classics CD, enough so that I have ordered a £1.99 plus £1.26 "Used - Very Good" copy. I too bought the cassette version back in the late '60s or early '70s.
