Amongst younger pianists I have a great deal of time for Freddy Kempf's recording too . Uchida , though not so young is very fine too .

Such a shame Gilels died before he recorded Op111 - judging by his 101,106,109 &110.

Not listened to any LvB in a while, what with all these Brits and Russians.
Will put that right this weekend with a bit of a fest I think.

In the 'Summer BaL' a couple of years back I gave a fairly detailed write-up of the versions in my library: Brendel (last recording), Kempff (mono), Lewis, Pollini, Rosen and Schnabel. I considered Pollini to be the best, Kempff to be the 'historical' recommendation (extraordinary playing!) and Brendel to be the least satisfactory.

This will be an interesting BAL. I have Pollini, Brendel and Uchida and Serkin. Have been having a listen to Pollini this afternoon.

I thought it might be useful to provide a link to the "Summer BAL" thread:

I had six recordings of op 111 then, seven now, having added Binns on fortepiano, which I like a lot.

The John Lill recording doesn't appear to be officially available, so if you don't mind, I'll leave it off the list.

John Lill is performing all the Beethoven piano sonatas at London's Cadogan Hall this autumn/next winter as part of his 70th birthday celebrations - I wonder if we can hope for BBC microphones to be present or even a recorded cycle. He's often at his considerable best in these works

Whenever I have been to see Lill perform at Cheltenham, Wyastone or Malvern I have never been less than impressed. And as you say, am51, he is a particularly fine player of Beethoven.

Purely out of curiosity,EA, what criteria do you use for a work being officially available?

I'm not by nature an "oh if only ..." person but the absence of Gilels' performance is one of my recording regrets

... a marvellous list from our Alpie : many thanks.

Among the 'original instrument' performances I also like Tom Beghin on a Johann Fritz of 1825.

Of those using more modern instruments I still like Charles Rosen very much.

Yves Nat probably a bit too wayward?

                                Eric Heidsieck?
