"BAL PRODUCER< LET"S NOT LET THE MUSIC GET TOO LOUD< IT MIGHT WAKE THEM UP !"

I've only just listened to Geoffrey Norris, recorded from Freeview last Saturday, and found it a frustrating experience. He was interesting and very well recorded, but the musical examples bordered on inaudibility unless you cranked him up to an excessive level. To hear the opening of the 5th repeated in several examples, and almost all of them sotto voce was a very odd experience, does this trouble others ? How are we expected to feel the tension in the playing and make comparisons if the balance engineer takes such a pussyfooting approach ?

I have 20 performances of this symphony in my collection, including all those reviewed, with the exception of Jansons. I did once own the EMI collection of his recordings with various orchestras but did not like it at all, although I love seeing him conduct in the concert hall. One performance which I have always admired is Bernstein / NYPO, but not the version that Geoffrey Norris condemned. My one was recorded in Tokyo, I think in 1979. Yes, he is quite ponderous at the opening, but he is wonderful in the slow movement, especially in the passage where the xylophone reinforces those great chords. Like Kondrashin he takes the opening of the finale at a great lick, almost hysterical. Perhaps this isn't for every day, but it's very convincing.

Sorry to rant about the balance, but listening on a wide range system it does seem absurd when the spoken word is always louder than the climax of a magnificent symphony.

Yes, I don't often catch up with BaLs but I've certainly noticed that - very offputting!

Someone mentioned(I thinkl Petrushka), Jurt Sanderrling's recording with the Berlin SO, and you can only get it with the brest of the cycle? Unless the rest is as top notch as the fifth, i amnot too usre about buying this version. Has anyone seen a single cd of this at all? Many thanks.

That was my recommendation Bbm - you can certainly get this fine Berlin Classics separate release of the 5th at a good price on Amazon.fr, but the Berlin Classics box I have includes 1,5,6,8,10 and 15 and all are outstanding sonically & musically - save the 15th which I personally find too slow - others don't agree! KS never recorded a complete cycle but some of these recordings have appeared on other labels. But that BC box of 6 symphonies is a great buy.

Sorry to go/stay a little off topic but if you are not too happy with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra 15th, how about the Berlin Philharmonic or Cleveland recordings under KS's direction?

There's a 16 disc box too, which also has his late Mahler, the Sibelius symphonies and other works, plus the Franck symphony, Bruckner's 3rd, etc. It is a bit more pricey at the moment, however (over £70 on amazon.co.uk). It was rather less when I got it a few years ago.

I think the experience of Maxim DSCH's Prague SO reading, and Kondrashin (the fast tempo for the first movement is uncannily sinister and fantastical) convinced me that a relatively faster performance is truer to the spirit of the piece. Not heard the Cleveland/Sanderling one, I do have the Berlin Phil but despite a slightly quicker timing I found the feel of the reading similar to the SO one. But - I wouldn't deny it has its own validity, I just think Sanderling's approach works better with the 5th and others.

Thanks for the further comments. I asked because the Cleveland recording was the preferred one when the 15th was the subject of Building a Library and was then spun on Essential Classics. That is the only time I have heard it, but was much impressed. I await, with some trepidation, the final release in the Mark Wigglesworth survey on BIS. In general I have found his Shostakovich recordings very much to my liking, but the 15th, the only one yet to be released on disc, did not come across as a 'winner' in the TtN broadcast of a performance directed by MW with the Sydney SO. Hopefully that was down to lack of familiarity with each other of conductor and orchestra and/or lack of sufficient rehearsal time.

I heard this tonight and to my ears the Ancerl and Kondrashin were head and shoulders over his other favourites !

The choice of the dimly recorded Bernstein live was very odd to choose an example from - rather than the legendary studio recording .

The non mention of the RCA Previn was just bizarre - I can only assume that Mr Norris has reverted to the old fashioned approach of only considering versions currently available on CD .

I do love the Neeme jarvi recording on Chandos. It's siuch an atmnospheric recording as well. Maybe it's that Chandos sound that does it?

Only took me 8 years to buy the Ancerl . It’s even better than I remembered as Is the fizzing account of the First with which it is coupled .
