For those who may find that they don't have enough versions or enough box sets of stuff they already have too much of..…

I did/do. Not many problems, only once (Mozart operas) the set was incorrectly numbered in the grocer's order system and consequently they sent me Bellini's Norma, which I could return without any problems and being refunded immediately as well.

The only (sofar) firm that really goes on my nerves is Vivaceclassical.com/ArkivMusik: they take your money as soon as you order, send what they've got in stock, and then ages nothing at all, no responses to any email you send, not only not replying, but not acknowledging them either.

For what it's worth I like the Jansons but,it has been said, I do have the musical knowledge of a concussed Bee.

I also have Barshai,Petrenko,Kitajenko,Mackerras and Mravinsky(live 1983). Would anyone like to recommend another/others to complement these? And,perhaps, why they would consider them.

I imagine it is, but when do you stop buying? I was like that with Beethoven, so many versions! I haven't heard the Jansons, will catch on iplayer but for me (out of versions I have, bearing in mind your preference) Kondrashin wins although I admit the boxed set is not cheap. (I actually have two Kondrashin boxed sets, the unmastered one has additional items on it inc. a beautiful Babi Yar with Gromadsky)

Neeme Jarvi? Just for the sheer bite of the trumpets and the sound quality of a typical top drawer Chandos recording.

It's so personal isn't it BBM? But, I admit I'd like to hear Jarvi.
I now find I also have the Ancerl 5th and looking on Amazon just now the set I have, the Aulos reissue of Melodiya, (the one with hidden magnets to open it) is not the same as the one they are offering now in that it has the Execution of Stepan Razin (which I have separately) Confusing innit?

Confucious certaqinly does reign, especially when you have a multitude of choices that you have on offer, from a work such as this!

Fair shout, it's on the Chandos-cheapy label now so game for a punt.

You have five versions - is it your favourite symphony - do you really need more? Not wishing to dissuade but I got like that with Beethoven's 3rd, half of which lanquish on the shelf.
But, if you can afford it, go for it, why not? I didn't hear the programme, I will catch the Jansons on iplayer and compare with my favourite, Kondrashin.

This is odd. I noticed that the podcast hadn't been released yesterday evening, but I did successfully access the correct episode of CD Review on iPlayer (though this was via my Sony Blu-ray player).

Geoffrey Norris offered a very 'safe' recommendation, i.e. nothing to frighten the horses. If, heaven forfend, you could only have one DSCH5 on your shelves, it would serve reasonably well, but I wouldn't be without Kondrashin, Mravinsky, Bernstein, Gergiev or Kreizberg (who didn't merit a mention, unless I missed it).

I only have one complete set,the downloaded Rostropovich, plus one other recording of each of the symphonies.
As much as I love them I find that,as the years go by, I increasingly turn to to the chamber music, especially those wonderful Quartets.

Ah, that Aulos set of Kondrashin and his Moscow band reminds me of the heady days of the Radio 3 messageboard. It was recommended to us by good old Ron Dough, the Laird of Carnoustie, and oliver sudden. I recall receiving the set - bought from Japan - and taking an age to work out how to open the box! Utterly thrilling playing and an excellent remastering job. I've yet to hear the Melodiya reissue, but wonder if their engineers did as fine a job in cleaning up the original masters?

I think it took me a week to figure out how to get it open!! But, well worth the effort! It is now my No. 1
