Well, the fantastic playing of the (R)SNO helps too!

Such a shame the SNO series stopped when he left for Gothenburg.

Yes but he did finish it withthe GSO on DGG!

The Ancerl was on one of a few excellent Supraphons which the impoverished were rewarded with issues on MFP LPs. …and a splendid introduction to the work!

I don’t think his Gothenburg recordings are in the same league.

One performance which I have always admired is Bernstein / NYPO, but not the version that Geoffrey Norris condemned. My one was recorded in Tokyo, I think in 1979.
              .
I grew up with the Bernstein (earlier one I presume). Why was it condemned? I remember being totally entranced by it. That was in the days when everything was just MUSIC to me! I knew nothing about messages, stories, Russian politics etc. My listening was totally unencumbered by such matters. Those were the days... maybe?! It has always beesn my favourite Shastakovich symphony too, but maybe a case of First Love!

I think that is probably why I liked the Ancerl so much as it is pre Testimony.

I think that’s where we can get lost. We delve into the composer’s ideas as to why he composed like that, and thus, loose the innocence of our initial idea, of why we appreciated this music so much, in the first place.

I go where music was born

                  J S Bach 1685-1750

Excellent point, Lordgeous. The innocence of one's first encounter with a piece such as DSCH 5, as was mine in the late 1960s (LSO/Previn), completely in ignorance of the political context and of the desperate plight of the composer prior to its composition -- impossible to recapture in 2022, but colouring listening in later years.

Gosh the Sanderling is rather dark an account . Doubt Stalin would have been cheering this one.
