Another BaL mission impossible! I'll settle for Concertgebouw/Haitink and, for the full Russian experience, Rozhdestvensky and the USSR Ministry of Culture Orchestra.

There are one or two Mravinsky performances around which are self-recommending but lovers of this work need to have the 1938 Leningrad PO/Mravinsky recording for the ultimate in authenticity. It will never make BaL on account of the sound quality but I hope that GN plays a snippet.

"The sound is the handwriting of the conductor" - Bernard Haitink

As a penniless student my first and for a few years only Shostakovich symphony recording was the Fifth with Ancerl and the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra on Music For Pleasure. I still have the LP but haven't played it for several decades. I have fond, if vague, memories of it.

I have two good CD versions: Haitink and Bernstein.

            Hardly surprising really!

On CD, Rozhdestvensky and Stokowski. The Rozhdestvensky version is on the Classical Russia Revelation label from 1996; I remember hoping for great things on this label and have a few others, but I think it sort of fizzled out?

On vinyl, quite a few ... Rowicki, Skrowaczewski, Svetlanov, Kondrashin, Rowicki again (different version), Silvestri, Bernstein, Mravinsky, Mitropoulos, Maxim Shostakovich, Ancerl, Previn. The one that stands out in my memory is Previn, but I think I'd be happy with any of them.

All I have is an ancient LP - Washington National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Howard Mitchell.

I'd be amazed if it were even mentioned.

I seem to remember that this was a BaL some years ago, and if I'm not mistaken Mackerras/RPO (on the Tring label) "won" or was at least some sort of recommendation......?
