I'm afraid IMO the Dvorak Stabat Mater (I've got the Kubelik) simply is not prime Dvorak , the work is too long (the longest Stabat Mater I know of anyway) and the musical contents outstay their welcome.
It has lovely passages, but -paraphrasing Rossini- boring longueurs.

Hugely outstays its welcome for me. Seems very, very dull stuff.

Dvorak's Stabat Mater was hugely more popular with choral societies a few decades ago than it seems to be now. It was one of those works that they simply had to do now and again. Fashions change. Interesting that the final choice was an American performance, not a Czech one.

            Did Kertesz record this?

If so, can someone provide a link please?. I only know of his Dvorak Requiem.....

            Thanks

            K.

I'm in totally agreement with DracoM and others. Not for me or my collection. Very dull. But I see where it is popular with Choral Societies, etc.

                ... very much my thoughts.

Perhaps one has to be Czech to be so convinced of how wonderful this piece is...

there is not liking things, and not liking Dvorak.
Very Naughty. And I had you down for part of the Culture Ministry team in my brave new world, @Nogs !!

Never heard the SM all the way through. Might still dig out my big box version though, but kind of seems low priority what with the comments and all....

Although I love Dvorak's music, I did find this work to be quite thin. My wife loves Dvorak too AND she speaks fluent Czech but agreed with me that this was not one of the masters best works...
