Listening to this BAL - so far the Boult, 1955 Philharmonia/Karajan and the Furtwangler have been my favourites. Struggling to hear what the fuss is about Jurowski .
The Haitink is about the only one I do not have I am tempted to get - I was very taken with his Tragic and Academic Festival overtures coupled with Arrau's Brahms concertos and the extracts from the symphony confirmed that.
Most of all I am wondering where the hell is Bruno Walter ???- add to him Sanderling, Ancerl, Jochum in 1977 , Loughran, Kertesz etc . I agree with Nimrod about Barbirolli - his Bavarian RSO record in particular is magnificent.
Rattle gets a mention as very good but not stellar - an epithet that I would not grant to this BAL . Another mediocre effort from Johnson.
I wish they had given this BAL to Richard Osborne instead .Last edited by Barbirollians; 02-06-13, 19:25.

Waldhorn, Harnoncourt's orchestra in the Brahms 2 (the whole cycle) is the Berlin Phil - and a very refreshed sound they make!

For once it seems nobody is feeling cheated, bemused or otherwise offended.
